I felt like that about Silent Hill when I started to play it for the first time a couple years ago. The graphics are really old and crappy. But you get used to it as you keep playing. Or at least I did so maybe you will too. :]
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (your argument is boring me.)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2012-04-26 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of know what you mean. I've been trying to play Xenogears, but old Playstation pixelated polygonal graphics really bother me for some reason. 8 or 16-bit graphics don't bother me as much, I don't know why.

[identity profile] cellorocket.livejournal.com 2012-04-26 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a graphics hound too, OP. It's weird too, because some of my favorite games of all time are not current gen. Shining Forces II, kotor2, ffx, etc etc blah blah. (I almost said old school, but none of those are really old school and I didn't want some actual old school gamer to rip me a new one, haha).

[identity profile] anonlulz.livejournal.com 2012-04-26 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
When I was your age, we only had black and white, pixelated games. ;P

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2012-04-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I... sort of feel the same way, depending on how primitive we're talking. I grew up with video games, so dated graphics aren't an issue for me. Games that intentionally evoke those old days are fine too -- I love VVVVVV. But some games just... have NOT aged well. Especially games from the N64/early PS2 era.

I mean, Jesus, look at Goldeneye 64. As it was described recently, the game looks like the cast of the movie was trampled by horses.

(Also, GE64 sucks)

But you should definitely just get over it. Work your way backwards if you have to.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's a different art form. It's like looking at b&w movies that also have different pacing and storytelling - there's grea stuff out there, it just takes getting used to - but it's worth it.

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
what kind of graphics DO you like, then?

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really think there's anything wrong with wanting a game that's aesthetically pleasing to you, I mean if you have to spend however many hours staring at it...

Personally I'm always more bothered by the old design choices, many of which sucked. For example I bought this pack of games that had Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dales, Planescape Torment and so on, and I tried to play BG1 first and I just can't. deal. with the. interface. I got frustrated enough with the tutorial to just leave it, and then GoG had Fallout 1 for free and I've been playing that since. It's so so sosoosososo much better and intuitive in comparison.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Which is interesting since Fallout 1 predates most of those by at least a year.

Fallout 1 IMO is the RPG that all other RPGs should take lessons from.

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I know, which I'm really appreciating, I'll probably have to pick up F2 sometime soon, even if I missed GoG haivng it for $3. Maybe if I had the BG manual it wouldn't have been so frustrating, but for now I've F1 and whenever I go back to that pack it'll probably be Planescape Torment or Icewind I try instead.

RPGs are too broad a genre to try and take it from one game. BGII is its own style. I'd rather not have seen it mimic Fallout 1.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
really? i think the aesthetic of old video games is far superior to the stuff they make now. like, super nintendo and before.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm partial to the PS1 era myself, comments about Goldeneye 64 notwithstanding.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I sometimes feel bad for people who got into games with the more current batches, because the graphics are pretty impressive, but it'll leave you biased for the past games like woah. The games of the SNES were some amazing story telling, but for people used to today's graphics going back to the bit toons is hard.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Try playing them for a few hours, and don't switch back and forth between old and new games, and you'll get used to the shitty graphics.

If you have the option, don't make the game full screen. It makes the graphics look worse, and you'll get used to the small screen too.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're just too young to appreciate them. <----- Is an old gamer. Or old enough to feel nostalgic about games like that.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Are you playing them on an HDTV/fullscreen on a hi-def monitor? Don't. That's a mistake. They'll look less grainy and pixelated if you've got an SDTV laying around, or you decrease the window size. That's how I played SMTI/II. Plus with a small window you can chat and play at the same time if you need to.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've been replaying through FFVII and it looks SO BAD on my HDTV. Sometimes the text gives me a headache because it's so messed up by the resolution. I think the PS3 automatically decreases the window size of PS1 games, because I recall playing MGS1 on an HDTV using a PS3 and it was shrunk to a smaller size without me changing any settings. Still didn't look great, but it was better.

Is there a way to decrease window size without using a PS3 or emulator or something like that? Like through the TV or the PS2 or something?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
You should try and find a copy of an old Infocom game.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Some of them have been remade with better graphics. Maybe start with those?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could tell you that you might be able to get by the graphics as you play the game, but there are still a select few games that I just cannot get into because of the graphics. :/ Sucks because I know I'm missing out due to this shallow reason.

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Just play what you want, dude. You don't have to like certain games. You don't have to be deep enough into video game culture to care about the history and stuff like that. If you just want to pick up a game and play it, do so.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you tried some of the old games that have be remade with updated graphics? I quite enjoyed the Chrono-trigger re-release on the Nintendo DS, and the Monkey Island re-releases on Steam are really quite amazing (plus you can switch between the old/new graphics which I find endlessly entertaining as someone who played the originals). I wasn't as impressed with the final fantasy remakes for DS, but that's because I didn't find the grindy gameplay all that pleasant or interesting even with updated graphics.
