Someone (cannot for the life of me remember who) made a rather interesting point: The Hobbit is supposedly written by Bilbo, who sees the entire thing as a grand old adventure because his journey wasn't really about the ring--it was about defeating Smaug the dragon--and because that's how Bilbo rolls. So of course it's going to be a fun, rollicking romp. The trilogy, however, is supposed to be written by Frodo, which is all gloom and doom because it's ALL about the ring, which is, y'know, evil. That and it was getting desperate and needed SOMEONE'S energy to feed off of in order to come back to power. When you're dragging a thing of evil around and you KNOW it's evil and you're depressed as fuck because of it, you'd probably write something slow and plodding too.
