Lord of the Rings was slow as fuck and frustrating at times, but the pacing in the Hobbit was much better.

I agree. To be honest I think I only made it all the way through Lord of the Rings because I had to read it for school, but I used to read The Hobbit for fun. (I did think Lord of the Rings was great in many ways, but slow... absolutely.)

I've had all six LotR books read to me once, read all three on my own at least once, and reread Two Towers in high school for a project.

I can't count how many times I've read The Hobbit. It's so EASY to get through and fun. It's a very lively book and one of my favourites. :)

I got a copy of it + the graphic novel for free...the GN was great, but as I had read Fellowship before, I wasn't eager to try the novel. I'll have to give it a shot.

Haha, it's funny you say that, because I've read the entirety of LOTR 5-6 times (I've lost track, lol) and The Hobbit maybe...twice? Don't know why that one is less relevant to my interests, but I guess it is. (I also think, for me, it became easier to plow through the slower bits of LOTR on rereads.)

It's different for everyone-- I think a lot of people really get into LotR for the various ongoing plots and the beautifully expanded world. Some people can sink into that easier than others. I have a life-long friend who reads all 6 books at least every 3 or so months.

The Hobbit is MUCH better. Ridiculously better, I ate that book up.

I wish LOTR was similar, as I really enjoyed the beginning of the first book but it went to pieces pretty quickly.

I was told to read the Hobbit first, because it was easier. Well, I hated it. Really couldn't get through it. There was no character development (nothing interesting...), the writing felt like it was aimed towards young children (nothing wrong with that, but it's not my cup of tea), and the story was interesting enough but damn it got tedious after a while.

Somehow, LotR is the opposite for me. I get sucked in immediately. It might not be as easy to read, but I think it's so much better.

Like I said above, it's different for everyone.
ext_18500: My non-fandom OC Oraania. She's crazy. (Stop! In the name of love!)

I think the reason why The Hobbit feels like it was aimed at young children is because it was. It was a children's novel, while LotR stepped up in age range significantly.

I will however say that The Hobbit is still a fair sight better reading than the Narnia chronicles, which upon rereading as an adult (after the movies started coming out) felt condescending in how child-oriented they were. (Note: I love Narnia, I had LWW, MN and LB read in class when I was in second grade. I read most of the rest of the books later in my childhood too.)

Someone (cannot for the life of me remember who) made a rather interesting point: The Hobbit is supposedly written by Bilbo, who sees the entire thing as a grand old adventure because his journey wasn't really about the ring--it was about defeating Smaug the dragon--and because that's how Bilbo rolls. So of course it's going to be a fun, rollicking romp. The trilogy, however, is supposed to be written by Frodo, which is all gloom and doom because it's ALL about the ring, which is, y'know, evil. That and it was getting desperate and needed SOMEONE'S energy to feed off of in order to come back to power. When you're dragging a thing of evil around and you KNOW it's evil and you're depressed as fuck because of it, you'd probably write something slow and plodding too.
