I thought they were interesting as bad-asses who were just as cutthroat as the boys, but other than that there was nothing to them (also not sure why the need for the blond to be draped all over Cato). I'm planning on reading the book eventually, would love to see that they're more fleshed out there.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not. The books are first person from Katniss's POV and she doesn't really care to get to know the Careers because A)they've the privileged Careers and B)she's going to have to kill them in a few days, so why bother becoming besties with them?

[identity profile] glo-unit.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
If anything, with the possible exception of Cato, they are actually fleshed out a little less. Also I'm not entirely sure Glimmer being all over Cato was a directorial decision as opposed to something they just did.(I think they were banging off-screen.)

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I felt nothing for their deaths or Marvel's. They were like those hideous bullies I faced in high school who never got what they deserved, so their demises were pretty satisfying for me. Cato's death was rather sad, but really only in the movie.

[identity profile] honeysuckle-raw.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I really disliked them for this reason, but not as catharsis. I hated that they were played off like the pretty/popular crowd in high school. Like, these are people who are going to kill your face with swords, not pretty cheerleaders and jocks. I thought it minimalized the severity of Careers vs. non-Careers.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Cato's death is the only one that was tragic to me, but sometimes I do wish someone else had won the games. That's what fic is for.

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Waaaah, why so much Career-hate ITT? :(

OP, I am totally with you, and "Carmen" is the most fantastic Glimmer song ever ever ever. Career Girls are the greatest. I hang with a lot of Career-fans in my circle of fandom if you ever want to join us. <3

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I fail to really see the love, myself. I think Careers in general are pretty interesting, and I love the fanon that's springing up for how they'd think about all this, what kind of training they'd get, what parents would raise their kids to do that in the first place, etc, though.

If I can ask anyone who's a fan of theirs: are they mostly interesting to you because they're Careers and all the Career fanon is usually put on them, or is there something about them individually that you like?

[identity profile] herosquad.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I can answer: I actually liked them a lot when I first read the books, before there was any kind of fic or fanon to speak of. Glimmer was my first favorite, and I was honestly drawn to her because of how fucked-up her situation was - not just being trained to kill other kids on TV since childhood, but the weird level of sexual exploitation of a minor involved (the see-through dress at the interview really squicked me out) hit a nerve with me. And the way Katniss was just like "lol dumb bitch" irritated me, though I understood her POV. Then Cato and Clove really started to grow on me - Cato's distraught reaction when he finds Clove's body is really important, I think, because it shows that they weren't just robots or sociopathic killing machines. They were conditioned to do awful things, but that puts immense strain on you psychologically, and ultimately they were all still kids. Their entire situation is just sickeningly fascinating to me.

Basically, I love the fanon and it's really helped flesh out these characters who were totally screwed in canon, but I liked them before I had read any of that, too!

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
From a post I wrote pre-movie and pre-fanon-explosion. (Conveniently titled "Why Clove is a Boss") --

I love Clove because Collins gives us so much potential without spoiling it by giving so many details that I don't feel the need to tell her story, or by giving a bunch of details that don't call to me. She's strong, deadly and dangerous in a realistic way that makes total sense with how I see her being raised. I love how Collins makes it obvious that she's on equal footing with Cato and Marvel. Her gender (as well as the size/strength discrepancy between her and the boys) is such a non-issue that it isn't even discussed, and I love the idea of a character who is so disconnected from gender stereotypes that she doesn't even think about it except maybe as an interview angle.

And as capable as she is, I love that there's also a helluva lot of pain in her situation. She worked her whole life to be violently killed on television. That's much worse than being taken by surprise that you're going to be violently killed on television, IMO. Whatever you think is going on with her and Cato, it's quite obvious that there's something going on that isn't typical kosher Career relationship (like what Marvel and Glimmer have). That's a cesspool of pain right there, and if they had any choice at all in volunteering they certainly wouldn't have chosen to go in together. Having this awful situation hanging over you while also the opportunity to have everything you were ever taught to want dangled in front of you (and knowing that you have to put your feelings aside and go on with the show) is supremely awful to me, and I'm very interested in it.

Born to Die is my theme song for Johanna Mason because it's my personal head canon that she was in love with Finnick but he "likes" his "girls insane" and the rest of the song just seems so Johanna.

Agreeing with all the other people here: Cato's death was horrible (I thought it was the hardest death in the movie, though not the book) but I had no real attachment to the other careers

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I love Clove, y'all. I don't give a FUCK
(Glimmer didn't really resonate with me but w/e. There are a lot of people out there who really felt for her)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-29 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I read the series and saw the first movie, but for the life of me I do not get why people fixate on the Careers. Or any of the Tributes from the first book besides Rue, Katniss, Peeta, and Cato. The rest of them were so unmemorable. They had almost no character. The only interesting thing about them was the concept behind them. The characters were bland.

[identity profile] leikomgwtfbbq.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I really latched on to Foxface because I found the idea of her fascinating. Her plan was apparently to outsmart (and out-lurk) everybody else, and it was going fine up until the last round of the Games. No one even knew where the hell she was or what the hell she was doing--actually, everybody just seemed to forget about her until Katniss saw her swiping food from the Careers' boxes and sneaking back to her hidey-hole.

But yeah, it IS true that she doesn't even have any lines or a character to speak of beyond "looking like a fox" and apparently "being extremely clever." (I would've liked to know a lot more about her, honestly.) I merely like the idea behind her.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-29 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
It always seems to me that she must have been doing something seriously interesting that we never got to see during all that lurking, It doesn't seem like the games to allow her to keep hiding instead of driving her into confrontations otherwise.

[identity profile] leikomgwtfbbq.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
A good point.

which only makes it more fascinating! What WAS she doing to outfox everyone? I really want to read a story about Foxface!

(Anonymous) 2012-04-29 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
To me, I think the book would have been vastly improved if Collins hadn't gone with the 1st person POV, and incorporated the stories of some of the other tributes, including at least one of the Careers. It would have been a far more fascinating look at this society/concept of children-in-war that she was supposedly going for (you know, rather than a really dumb love triangle and cute descriptions of clothing).

(Anonymous) 2012-04-29 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Thiiiis. I loved Clove in both movie and book versions because she actually seemed to have a damn personality, unlike Miss Katniss with her "Emotional Range Of A Teaspoon", and was more proactive rather than sleeping all the time and being forced into a relationship to gain sympathy (if that makes any sense). I thought Cato was more upset that he didn't get to kill Clove himself (as mentioned in a fic I read once).

Glimmer and Foxface were also awesome - they had nuances to them and I really wanted to know their backstories.

Didn't really give a damn about Katniss, Peeta, Rue, Thresh, et al... (Well, maybe Haymitch and Gale.)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-29 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"I thought Cato was more upset that he didn't get to kill Clove himself"

Just interested, what makes you think so? I don't really disagree with this idea, it's just that this has never occurred to me.

I would have liked to know more about Foxface, Clove and Glimmer, too. Or actually, this applies to all the tributes. It bugs me that we never even got names for most of them.

[identity profile] leikomgwtfbbq.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Like I said above, Foxface utterly fascinates me, and I really wish we knew more about her. Including her actual name.

(I liked Haymitch a lot, too. I thought his character was really interesting. Also, he's played by Woody Harrelson in the movie, and I freakin' love Woody Harrelson; he's one of my favorite actors.)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-29 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Disappointed that no one in this thread is discussing the possibility of Clove/Glimmer.

[identity profile] sara-rojo.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I find the concept of Careers interesting .especially the sexual exploitation angle that someone mentioned here, hinted at in the first book and confirmed later-, but the execution wasn't so good. I also think a third-person POV would have enriched the series a great deal, even if I love Katniss.

But let me just say that I think the fandom fixates on the Careers because they are beautiful and strong and rich.

My experience in several fandoms has always pointed to a deep frivolity when focusing on secondary characters. That's the only thing that explains the fixation on them and not on Foxface or Thresh, who are just as interesting, more unique and definitely more misterious.
