Yes because there is so much pedophilia between a twelve year old (Aang) and a fourteen year old (Katara), that two year gap is such a problem. I mean, it's not like there's a twelve year gap between Katara and Zuko... Oh wait, yes there is.

Unless, of course, you're referring to the 100 years that Aang was in suspended animation, and he didn't grow older, physically or mentally, making him, wait for it, still kind of mentally/emotionally/physically twelve.

He is. I meant two year gap, not twelve, lol. |D Just goes to show that I should type while annoyed...

Yep, he's sixteen, so there's the same amount of age-gap between Aang and Katara, and Zuko and Katara. /self fail

Ah, okay. For the longest time, I thought Azula was older than Zuko and went "Don't tell me I've skewed their ages again!!"

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-01 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I just screwed up, lol. |D

Thanks for catching it! :)

A lot of people say this, but what's forgotten is the fact that Azula being older wouldn't make sense in a story context. Zuko was the heir apparent after the line of succession shifted to Ozai's immediate family. If Azula had been older, she would've been first in line, not her brother.

Maybe it's just me, but I think there's a bigger difference in maturity between 12/14 and 14/16, so the latter doesn't creep me out as much.

Not that I ship Zutara -- I don't really ship any A:TLA pairings, mostly because I hated how all the characters found their true loves at 12-16.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-01 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there is in our world, yes, and at the beginning of AtLA, most certainly, but at the same time, I don't think that, by the end, it's still as much of a difference. /shrug

Still, it felt like a teenager and a little kid. This is who they reminded me of.

I can understand that a little from the very first part of the series, but by the end and everything they've gone through... No. Just no. They've gone through hell together, fighting to save the world from more war and destruction. Both of them were forced to grow up far too young, and by the end, they're not really "kids" anymore, and they're in a society that encourages growing up quickly.

I remember that story. I think he wasn't the father, in the end. But still, this makes me pretty uncomfortable...

..please, PLEASE tell me this isn't what you're implying.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
It's a little worse, actually. The real life versions were a year older than Katara and Aang.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think people, especially boys, grow up a lot during those two years. I recently took a British film class and in two films I can think of that we watched (Ratcatcher and This Is England) the protagonists were 12 year old boys or so and had relationships with older girls that seemed WAY older but then we (my class) realized "oh, it's just a couple of years, not the crazy age gap we thought".

Man, This is England had a make out scene where we were all wondering if it was legal. That age is weird.

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Even though it wasn't true or whatever in the end, this tabloid fodder story always creeped me the hell out. D:

[identity profile] miakun.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
For reals. This argument is so ridiculous. It's like people don't remember the hormone overdrive most kids have at that age anyway. Most of the kids that were 12 in junior high were all macking on each other when I went to school.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't go that far at my school, but in my city, the 12 & 14 year olds were more likely to have more in common then the 14 & 16 year olds, you know? So the 12 + 14 year old = CREEPY when 14 & 16 year olds aren't makes literally no sense to me. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there's a big enough difference both ways, but part of it is that Katara acts older than her age, and by the season 3, looks like she's sixteen or seventeen, and Aang really still only looks twelve, maybe thirteen.

I prefer Mai and Zuko (and don't really like any of Katara's options), but I do admit I don't really like how Aang and Katara ended up. It did sort of ring of "main hero must have main girl!". I think it would have been better as a less explicit ending. Just the hint of it could have worked, and then canonized later in Korra.

Twelve year gap? What? Zuko was 16 in the original series, Katara was 14. That's just two years, same as Katara and Aang.

I'm not a Zutarian and I'm pretty okay with Kataang, but I think the problem people are having with their ages isn't the numbers, but that Aang seems pretty prepubescent, but Katara doesn't. They're both so young it's not a huge problem, but I think some people who are/were teenage girls are sort of confused about how she would be attracted to him when he's still so childlike. But they're not normal kids, and it would probably be a while before it went there or anything, so it's not that weird to me.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I meant two, lol. I just can't type today... |D

Yeah, agreed. I think she liked him, but she wasn't physically attracted to him until later, which, IMO, is a valid way to go about things. (Not that other ways aren't valid, but that this is also valid, you know?)

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. And you don't sound like you're being weird about what is and isn't valid, don't worry.

... but I think some people who are/were teenage girls are sort of confused about how she would be attracted to him when he's still so childlike.

That is probably my biggest obstacle to Kataang, personally. I can't think of Aang, as we saw him throughout AtLA, being in a relationship with anyone. Kid with a crush? Totally (because that's what he was). Teenage girl reciprocating prepubescent boy's crush? Eh...*cringe* My headcanon is that they got together at the end of the show, then realized they didn't really know what to do or where to go with that relationship, wind up splitting up and doing their own things and/or just being friends for a while, and then becoming romantically involved in their late teens or twenties for real this time. I openly would have preferred Zutara, but if that's how Kataang's relationship really went, I could totally get on board with it. (Seeing Aang's adult design in LoK also helps.)

But then I also really hate stories of "we met when we were kids and had true love ever after~~" It always seems so over-sentimental and unrealistic. Even when the young kids in question have world-saving adventures together... that always seems like rationale for life-long friendships or at least camaraderie, definitely, but not necessarily decades of romantic interest. =\

I enjoy your head canon immensely. ^_^

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hm, I think you might be understating the importance of that sense of partnership, for some people (probably these characters, since it worked out for them) it seems like it's a necessary thing to have. Especially if you've been through something huge together that's a defining moment in your life, and it's really important that the people close to you would get it?

I like your Kataang headcanon! Mine's that it's a "marry someone you like, and romantic love will come" type thing at least on Katara's side, and it worked out really well for her.
