I facepalmed when that happened! I can't believe no one in the producing of that bit spoke up and said, "Wait, I'm diabetic/have someone close to me who's diabetic/have even a little knowledge about diabetes emergencies; just change that to be a syringe fulla glucose and you'll be all set."

Many people know pretty much nothing about diabetes, and think insulin is "diabetes medication" in the sense that if a problem is caused by diabetes, insulin is the solution. I see it done right on TV sometimes (Stanley from The Office comes to mind) but often I see it done wrong.

You're right, many people know nothing, but, migod, diabetes is so common. I would have thought somone involved--the freakin' grip, or someone--would have said, "Uh, wait a minute..."

But I do not work in The Industry, so I suppose I ask too much.

It's glucagon, not glucose. Glucagon tells the liver to release stored glucose into the bloodstream.

Dextrose, actually, is the form with which I'm familiar--but, yeah, we're on the same page!

If a diabetic is out cold, don't give them dextrose. Dextrose tablets are meant to be administered orally, which could lead to choking in an unconcious person. Glucagon is the injectable treatment for a severe hypo.

Providing they're not fitting or in danger, it is possible to ride out a severe hypo - you just wake up a few hours later feeling like crap.

Sorry, I'm diabetic.

Dextrose injectable, I did mean! ^_^ Yes, forcing tablets into a diabetic's unconscious mouth isn't a good idea.

And if you don't have anything injectable at hand putting fine sugar on their tongue to melt does the trick without any choking risk (as long as you don't put too much sugar at once of course). It's not very fast but sometimes you don't have a choice. You can also smear honey on their gums but you have to be careful to not use too much due to the choking risk.

Of course if the person is out cold you should also always call an ambulance just to be safe.
