I facepalmed when that happened! I can't believe no one in the producing of that bit spoke up and said, "Wait, I'm diabetic/have someone close to me who's diabetic/have even a little knowledge about diabetes emergencies; just change that to be a syringe fulla glucose and you'll be all set."

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Many people know pretty much nothing about diabetes, and think insulin is "diabetes medication" in the sense that if a problem is caused by diabetes, insulin is the solution. I see it done right on TV sometimes (Stanley from The Office comes to mind) but often I see it done wrong.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
You're right, many people know nothing, but, migod, diabetes is so common. I would have thought somone involved--the freakin' grip, or someone--would have said, "Uh, wait a minute..."

But I do not work in The Industry, so I suppose I ask too much.

It's glucagon, not glucose. Glucagon tells the liver to release stored glucose into the bloodstream.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Dextrose, actually, is the form with which I'm familiar--but, yeah, we're on the same page!

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
If a diabetic is out cold, don't give them dextrose. Dextrose tablets are meant to be administered orally, which could lead to choking in an unconcious person. Glucagon is the injectable treatment for a severe hypo.

Providing they're not fitting or in danger, it is possible to ride out a severe hypo - you just wake up a few hours later feeling like crap.

Sorry, I'm diabetic.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Dextrose injectable, I did mean! ^_^ Yes, forcing tablets into a diabetic's unconscious mouth isn't a good idea.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
And if you don't have anything injectable at hand putting fine sugar on their tongue to melt does the trick without any choking risk (as long as you don't put too much sugar at once of course). It's not very fast but sometimes you don't have a choice. You can also smear honey on their gums but you have to be careful to not use too much due to the choking risk.

Of course if the person is out cold you should also always call an ambulance just to be safe.

Really, paying a nurse a few bucks to act as adviser for that scene can't be THAT expensive!

(Anonymous) 2012-05-05 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure they could even have found out how diabetes works on wikipedia. WIKIPEDIA. Even fanfiction writers do the research (well, maybe not all, but still).

+1

(Anonymous) 2012-05-05 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
They do all kinds of shit in tv for shock value.

Cool to know someone else is watching Touch.

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ikr? I pretty much thought I was the only one around here.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Word.

[identity profile] knkfics.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah, I work for an endocrinologist and I laughed for like ten minutes during that scene. Even House doesn't make medical errors that big..... usually.

[identity profile] thecrazyalaskan.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Coming from the daughter of a diabetic (who has also worked diabetes into her headcanon for a couple of characters and has researched her stuff) I'm raging a little bit right now. Would it kill y'all to look it up?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. It's somewhat worrying, being an insulin-dependant diabetic.

I tell the people with me: if you're not sure what to do, call an ambulance.

[identity profile] ice-cold-soda.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
THANK you. I admit I'm not familiar with this show / movie, and that I mostly see it show up in fanfic, but those situations just make me want to slap the writer(s). My mother's diabetic, and the thought of that happening to her because of some misinformed welldoer just makes me wince so hard.

[identity profile] 47-trek-47.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
As an incredibly bitter ex-Heroes fan, knowing Tim Kring's new show did this makes me cackle with evil glee.

As a person in general, it makes me kind of want to cry, and to hope desperately that it does not lead to a very tragic incident in real life.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know the canon but...So many people (unfortunately) learn all they know about diabetes from series like this, would it kill them to check that they're not spreading potentially dangerous misinformation? Because I just know someone will think this is what you really should do in an emergency situation.

FFS, there's a reason many diabetics carry sugar cubes with them at all times.

[identity profile] dazzledfirestar.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Though I'm not familiar with the canon, I share your fear, OP. I've been insulin dependant basically my whole life (diagnosed at 2, I'm 31 now) and the thought of what would happen if some well meaning stranger tried to help in an emergency with only this as a guide? My God... that's terrifying.

Five minutes online and the writer(s) would have had a better idea of how this shit actually works and actually goes down. Way to earn your money there, folks. It took literally five seconds to google "treating a diabetic coma" and get the accurate info.

There's a reason I have dex gel and spray in my purse at all times. I haven't used a Glucagon shot since I was a small child but I've sure as hell needed sugar in a hurry.

I don't even know what this is from but as a type one insulin-dependent diabetic I am cringing. Hopefully no one filed this away as being sound advice. Was he even told how much insulin to administer or did he just inject him with some? ::shudders::

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 09:28 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, what a bunch of idiots. That's embarassing. I don't evenknow what show that is...

They don't even need to consult a professional for info on that, the internetz has enough. Heck, wikipedia can tell them about it.

I always LOL when I see people in TV series doing 'CPR' at a rate of like one compression/5 sec with arms bent. And here I thought that it is common for people in developed countries to do courses on BLS (unlike here...). Surely at least one person on set would know better...?

[identity profile] camshaft22.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I know it's old, but as a brittle type 1 diabetic, THANK YOU for this.
