If you didn't find "Pillows and Blankets" or the L&O spoof funny, it is probably not the show for you.

I just want to know how I can watch this show from the beginning. Is it on Netflix or anything? (I'm guessing not...)

Probably? I honestly don't know if that will make it more funny, but it's one of those shows where you get the greatest effect when you go through it in order with the characters, I think.

[identity profile] phoeliac.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd recommend watching it in order, to get the character development, but to be honest it's one of those shows where you can't really force liking it. It's either your thing or it's not.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Might not be the show for you. It's consistently one of my favorite shows and I find myself laughing out loud at nearly every episode, but different strokes for different folks. If you don't find it funny, it might just not be your type of humor. No big mystery there.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Different strokes for different folks.

I think it's hilarious and I am LOVING season 3, but... it's not for everyone.

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Just recently I started watching it from the beginning and was about to ask fans if it got better in later episodes. If you think you should watch from the beginning to see the funny don't bother. I guess it's one of those shows that only certain people find funny and other don't.

I kind of agree. I started watching it on Hulu, and maybe it's because I haven't watched it from the beginning but I just didn't find it funny.

The thing is I want to like it. I liked the characters, I thought it was well written and fun and the type of thing I should like. I just realized that after a few episodes I had barely laughed at all.

Personally, I'm having trouble getting into season 3. Some gems to be found here and there, but I loved season 1 and adored season 2 - I'm no longer desperate to catch the latest episode as soon as it airs.

My Dad hated it from the beginning, though. I was watching my favourite season 1 episodes while he was staying over, and he was all "Why are you watching that? Can't we watch that show you were so into three months ago, or even that other one you showed me the other day?" We generally have the same taste in movies, same kind of humour etc., so I guess the show isn't for everyone. But yes, seeing the character development is half the fun:)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
There's been a load of focus on character development lately, so if starting from the beginning doesn't work, it's probably just not your type of humor. Community's pretty heavy on running gags and recurring jokes based on character traits.

I don't know that watching it from the beginning would help. I watched the first few episodes and found them horrible and not funny at all. According to my brother (who loves a couple of questionable things, but in general we have the same taste) it takes awhile to get really good so I might give it a chance someday when I run out of other things to watch, but I have a feeling it's just not my thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably because you are a normal person, and not one of those freaks who gets off on pretending to be speshul with ass burgers. Those fuckers are the only ones who enjoy that show.

Yeah bro I think

I mean, why do you

want to watch something you don't

enjoy....? It's cool if you don't like it--!! yeah!!

It's cool man. It's cool. ((I really like community, I'm just on the other side of the fence where I can't see how it could possibly NOT be funny, and I did come on after the hiatus.))

I found S1 to be much more enjoyable, but it's really a YMMV thing.

Season three in particular is really reliant on being familiar with the show, so it definitely helps to watch it from the beginning. It really starts to get great at around episode seven of season one, so if you watch that one and don't like it, it's probably not your kind of show. I'd also check out Contemporary American Poultry and Modern Warfare from season one, Epidemiology and Critical Film Studies from season two, and Remedial Chaos Theory from season three, since they are usually held as being really great episodes and perfect examples of Community's tone. Community has a pretty specific sort of humor, and I can see how non-fans would find it too weird or up it's own ass, so contrary to what some fans say, not enjoying doesn't make you an idiot or anything. Also, Contemporary Impressionist was just bad, except for the ending, which obviously wasn't really funny, just heartbreaking. A lot of the post-hiatus episodes have focused more on drama than humor, and while they are pretty great episodes, most of aren't really that funny all the way through.

I didn't care for the show at first, but what really sold it for me was the Dungeons and Dragons episode.

Also, pretty much all the episodes on this list: http://www.pajiba.com/seriously_random_lists/the-10-best-episodes-of-nbcs-community-.php

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the show, but I think it has been a lot weaker since the hiatus (i.e. second half of season 3) than it was before. So I'd definitely try to watch it from the beginning.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait.

If you were going to start watching a show, wouldn't it make more sense to start from the beginning in the first place? No really. Would you opening a book to a random page and start reading from there? Or go to the cinema half-way through a movie? Television series are generally the same. Starting from the beginning gives you the information you need to understand and enjoy the later parts.

So yes, I do think you might enjoy it more if you watched it from the beginning, OP. That doesn't just go for Community either, it goes for most media.

I'm surprised no one else has said this. I'm a huge fan of the show. With that said I would never say it's the funniest show on TV. For me, the show that makes me laugh out loud the most is TBBT. I like Community because it dares to do things no other show does...and the meta and the references are genius. I think it is funny as well, but def not the funniest especially not in the laugh out loud way.

[identity profile] cure-light.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It's pretty hard to get into from the middle. The later episodes are funnier once you know who the characters are.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen the show in its entirety and I don't think it's that funny either. It will make me laugh sometimes but never "laughing out loud" laughter. It's an okay show, just not the funniest.

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
The show needs context to be funny. Go start watching from the first episode, and then tell me that it's not funny.

What kind of funny are you looking for or were expecting? I wouldn't say community's ever been a show where I've laughed all the way through consistently. There's only been a couple episodes like that. Also you kinda have to be some-what familiar with media to get some things. I like it because it tries really hard to be clever and when it works, it is much better than most things and when it doesn't work, I'm get where they were going and I like the attempt. It's my really arrogant hipster show, and that's why I love it. But hipsters are fucking annoying so, it's not really for everybody.
