I feel ya. Replace roommate with best friend and this is me all over. It's gotten a bit better though, and there is some truly lovely fanart done for it. Now I just kinda... fan the fandom?

And I did attempt to read it, but I got bored after a few pages.

[identity profile] harpsi-fizz.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I literally haven't a clue as to what Homestuck is about or anything except that "bucket" is naughty. The only reason I even bothered to look was because secrets on RP!S would sometimes show these characters wearing zodiac shirts and I was hoping it was some kinda zodiac series.

Is there some kinda abridged synopsis on youtube, I wonder?

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Abridged is... hard. It's thousands of pages long.

Here goes! I try to keep this as spoiler free as possible.

Four kids play a game. The game is more then simply a game, it bends time and space and enables you to save your world from the apocalypse, and make a new universe. It also turns out by playing the game you cause that apocalypse in the first place (not playing was never an option, time and space manipulation and all that).

These children end up in an unfortunate situation where the game is not only un-winnable, but one of the games baddies has ascended to become something that not only threatens their session, but multiple universes and the spaces inbetween. This effects not only their session, but the session that created theirs. The children are helped and hindered by the winners of the previous session, who wrote their names in our stars (the zodiac is effectively each of these players identification in their language) and offer both antagonism and essential help depending on their mood. Additional input is provided by both helpful creatures in the future who survived the mess, and a malevolent creature who serves a threat that might be even bigger then the game baddie. Also, there might be more then 4 humans involved in the game after all, as each kid discovers their respective caretaker has more to do with everything then they thought...

The cast is huge. Meta references within and to the author's other works abound. The narrative reads like you are playing a text based game, usually told from a constantly shifting second-person narrative perspective. The narrative deliberately jumps around in time, thought it all makes sense in the end if you read everything.

YOU HAVE TO READ EVERYTHING. Now, if you don't like this in the end, that's fine, it's not for you, oh well. But if you read it, and you don't read all of it (the intermissions are not really intermissions at all) you will be really fucking confused. You can't read a synopsis just to skip to where it is now, there's too much detail that is lost, and inconsequential facts become devastatingly important later. You really, really have to click on the "show pesterlog" parts. Most agree that to save yourself some time, if you are still reading at the page titled "WV: Ascend" and you aren't liking this yet, you should stop. But do read that far, this thing starts slow and picks up momentum as it goes along. This slow start is really necessary to hammer out some things you have to know. It stops slogging by that WV page I mentioned.

If you do end up trying again then stick around, enjoy the community. We have fanart. We have fan SONGS. we have so many fan songs there are now two official fan albums. And multiple official music albums. Homestuck is a true webcomic: it uses flash, it uses gifs, there are links to side things to read... and the music is fucking beautiful. You can hate homestuck and love the music. So much music there are over 16 albums now. You can listen to most of it for free.

There you go?

Huh, you know, I misread your response to post above you, but I'm not getting rid of all that typing now. I would say it sounds like your not going to make it cause it's not for you, but... there really is no good brief synopsis because it's too convoluted a story for a proper synopsis to work. The closest I think you could get is a series on youtube of videos, each covering an act or part of an act. But again, anything briefer would leave you with questions.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you wrote this, it's a great synopsis.

[identity profile] harpsi-fizz.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh... oh wow. I can see why it has such a following then. There's a lot to work with there, which is what fans feed on. Even in that description you gave, suddenly I kinda "get it" with the fan art. I mean, why they love it so much. And this is all a web comic written by one person? That's... that's really something.

I'll have to save it to try it out. The last thing I need is to get obsessed with something at the moment (it's not a good time). Also, I'm still wary of joining new fandoms. Still kinda recovering from the battlezone of nasty mean-ness that was the Harry Potter fandom.

But thank you for taking the time to tell me about this. Shows how devoted some of the fans are.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
We are always trying to make more homestucks.

Here, this is pretty spoiler free. Well, not really, but without context you don't know what the hell is going on to the point that we can show it to others safely.

http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=003049

This isn't even the best flash. There are better ones, and that's in an objective sense: the author improves his craft. But it's a good taste to see that yes, while it starts slow, there's also stuff like this.

Enjoy!

If you end up not into it but love the song, it's called sburban jungle. It's on album 4.

[identity profile] kyogres.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the summary. It sounds like something I would like, actually. I tried to get into it once before, because I thought it was about the zodiac and I love zodiac stuff... but I could not make it through the slow start. I guess I'll try reading to the WV page.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to be honest with you though... It's not really about the Zodiac, though by design all the troll kids do have some traits (or rather, their traits are associated with the zodiac since they are the reason it exists in universe), but they aren't even until act 5.

Homestuck fans argue in house a lot, usually over stupid stuff, but people who skip to act five are probably the ones who get the most disdain. They tend to ask the stupidest "wait, I'm confused" questions. Probably because they skipped 4 FREAKING ACTS.

Don't do that. Please. But really, the trolls are not the main characters, though in a story this long they have story arcs that have lasted longer then some webcomics are in length. Still, you have a lot of pages before they show up proper.

That said, they are some of the characters many fixate on. They are pretty freaking popular, and quite awesome. But if you read waiting for them to show up... it'd be a chore.

[identity profile] kyogres.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, I won't skip any acts. I'm one of those people who has to read everything in its entirety, in chronological order. (Even things that I hate. I thought I was going to die of boredom when Crime and Punishment was assigned for a class. Pretty sure I'm the only one who didn't use SparkNotes to get through it.)

The trolls aren't the main characters? Weird. Almost everything I see about Homestuck involves the trolls. I just assumed they were the main characters, or frequently recurring side characters.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, they are very present in the story. Don't think they are there and gone or anything. I don't want to give spoilers obviously, but the trolls are quite active. But as mentioned, they are from the last session of the game. The current session, by necessity, is what drives the plot.

The fandom is crazy. If you do a crossover of something with Homestuck, the Homestuck fans will swarm and then yell at you for crossing over their thing with something else.

/has seen this a few times.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously? Well, there go all of the plot bunnies I had. :|

(...Tenth Doctor vs. Condesce, for example. Please tell me I'm not alone in thinking that would be awesome.)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
...are you my friend??

She LOVES both DW and HS and really wants to do a crossover just like that, srsly. don't remember if it was Ten or Eleven but she really wants to pit the Doctor and the Condesce against each other. :D

And...um there are lots of HS crossovers and lots of fans (like me) who like them. I suppose it depends on where you go...I've yet to see a storm of rabid fans yell at someone for making a crossover but then I'm not really that active and hardly ever go on Tumblr so

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen fanart for that and nobody was complaining about it! Not sure what above anon is talking about, but then again I have no part in the tumblr fandom because it seems a little batshit crazy

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Actually... Dr Who is not without fans for crossover.

http://static.zerochan.net/full/21/38/794421.jpg

Or is this what you based that on?

“So… who is she? How do you know her?”

“Well, to put it simply using an alien term you can’t possibly begin to comprehend—”

“Nothing new there.”

“…I’m her kismesis. It’s like a lover, sort of, kind of, but with more… more stabbing.”

“She’s stabbed you?”

“…only twice.”

bah, that link doesn't work D:

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It worked fine for me? I use IE, if that helps.

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
Dunno if anybody still cares, but try this one instead then. This should work for everybody!

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Not all the fandom is like that...a lot of us really like crossovers...

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
whoa what the hell kind of homestuck fans do you interact with

every homestuck fan on my dash is obsessed with crossovers, the sillier the better. I was following this surprisingly creative Ed Edd n Eddy one. Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-08 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
AH YES wow didn't expect to see this on f!s, but yes edstuck is surprisingly really interesting???? homestuck fandom is really insane when it comes to creativity and talent.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
You have probably heard this but just throwing it out there in case you haven't - the first few acts are REALLY slow. My friend kept encouraging me to read it when it was boring and I'm so glad I did because it gets so much better and I adore it now.

If you have no interest in reading I'm not trying to push you in that direction at all! Do as you will. Just throwing that info out there. I know I'm not the only one who thinks it gets better after a little while.

And having a friend ruin a fandom for you like that just...really sucks. =/

[identity profile] sochitelya.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard the first few acts are slow (though I've also seen people complaining that they love the first acts and you're not a real fan if you didn't love it from day one) but I'm one of those people who need to be caught immediately or I'll go find something that appeals to me more. So a slow beginning just ain't my thing, but glad you're having fun. (:

And I don't mind the occasional 'this is what I like and why I like it' but the constant 'Homestuck! Homestuck! I will now talk about it at great length and also compare everything you ever say to Homestuck!' is what made me hate it.
