For me the annoying con people ruined it for me but I gotta admit some fanarts are..cute and I still save them.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
What irritates me is people wearing troll hats and cat ears and sprite wings not at cons, but IN NORMAL EVERYDAY PUBLIC LIFE.

I just feel so much secondhand embarrassment.

The fanart's pretty good. I save it if I think I could learn something from the person's anatomy/colors/filters.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my friends did the exact same thing, only she was one of those fans who complains about EVERY new plot development and won't shut the hell up (I'm serious, we're talking about every time the comic updates) about how the trolls ruined Homestuck and how none of the fans pay attention to the more interesting parts of the comic and how the fantrolls are the cancer of the fandom and how Jack Noir or whoever was ruined and how Hussie doesn't know how to write but she'll continue reading anyway just to see if they go back to the Felt or the Intermission stuff or whatever and remember when the comic was good and blah blah blah...

And then she wonders why I don't want to read it when like 80% of my exposure to it is how much it's been ruined and how much the fans suck.

So yeah, I know that feeling. It's unfair, and you can't help but feel bad because you're not giving something a chance and that maybe you'll like it, but when you're constantly exposed to something you previously were indifferent to all the time, your interest level just plummets. =/

[identity profile] othellia.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
we're talking about every time the comic updates

That is intense. Like DAILY HATE intense.

Hope she loses interest and/or stops bothering you soon. And I'm saying that as a Homestuck fan.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Same anon. Aww, thank you for that.

But yeah, I feel bad for not giving it a try and I won't be a jerk and hate on people who are fans of Homestuck, but thanks to her daily rants, I know in what sequence the trolls die and who dies, when Jack Noir turns into a dog thing (she was really hung up on Jack Noir, but I'm not into the fandom so I can't really guess why), which kids ascend into God tier, etc, etc. and it kind of kills it for me. =| I try not to say I won't give it a try anywhere (which is why I'm anon right now) because I've had other people snap at me for it and then say I'm selfish for letting this get to me.

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry dude, The fandom can do some kinda crazy things to the nicest people. I'm not sure why.

[identity profile] sochitelya.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel ya. Replace roommate with best friend and this is me all over. It's gotten a bit better though, and there is some truly lovely fanart done for it. Now I just kinda... fan the fandom?

And I did attempt to read it, but I got bored after a few pages.

[identity profile] harpsi-fizz.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I literally haven't a clue as to what Homestuck is about or anything except that "bucket" is naughty. The only reason I even bothered to look was because secrets on RP!S would sometimes show these characters wearing zodiac shirts and I was hoping it was some kinda zodiac series.

Is there some kinda abridged synopsis on youtube, I wonder?

The fandom is crazy. If you do a crossover of something with Homestuck, the Homestuck fans will swarm and then yell at you for crossing over their thing with something else.

/has seen this a few times.

You have probably heard this but just throwing it out there in case you haven't - the first few acts are REALLY slow. My friend kept encouraging me to read it when it was boring and I'm so glad I did because it gets so much better and I adore it now.

If you have no interest in reading I'm not trying to push you in that direction at all! Do as you will. Just throwing that info out there. I know I'm not the only one who thinks it gets better after a little while.

And having a friend ruin a fandom for you like that just...really sucks. =/

Well, no, it's not a good reason, but what you're describing isn't a reason- it's an involuntary reaction. Totally normal. On non-fandom related similar topic, I remember three different people at three different points in my life who were so obsessed with non-stop talking about their particular religions (Evangelical Christian, Baptist, And Pagan/Wiccan) that I had similar "I cannot" feelings.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I got this with The Matrix and Cowboy Bebop. Bluh.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Same thing happened to me; I had a friend in high school who would always bring up Homestuck and all his IM pictures were pictures of the characters, so I grew to hate the art style as well as the comic itself. Maybe I'll check it out in 5 or 10 years, but... yeah. Also happened with Sherlock, Supernatural, a lot of these big popular fandoms.

Yeah, that's basically me and My Little Pony right now. The show is cute and I love the animation for it, but good GOD, the Internet fandom for it is exhausting. It's making me hard to watch episodes without pulling different memes I've seen from the episodes and it's mentally frustrating.

Maybe you can enjoy the shows without being part of the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
=/ that makes me sad, anon. I love Homestuck; my ex-roommie (still one of my best friends) got me into it and she and I have had so much fun going through it together. But she was never in my face about it and she didn't spoil anything for me. Seriously I think it's sad that some people are so obnoxious about fandoms that it turns people off from them completely, and is annoying besides.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
OP here. See, if my roommate was considerate like that, I would have probably given Homestuck a chance, but I unfortunately first heard about it from her, and she was in my face with it (and with several other people) pretty much the day after she started reading. Don't get me wrong, she's a really good friend of mine, which is probably why I haven't told her to shut up by now, but holy crap. She compares Homestuck to everything. EVERYTHING. The worst part is, she talks a lot too, so it's not just a simple spoiler or comparison, it's the who what when where why how. I've actually learned how to tune her out when anything Homestuck-related comes up. @_@ And I have tried to read it before, a long time ago, but the only thing I could think while reading was "I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT." Yeah, I ended up stopping after the first few pages, so I don't really count that as "giving it a chance".
/rant

Hurr hurr that felt good to get out.

It's our curse. We even have a fansong related to that.

Plot is only one part of the Homestuck experience! There are some well directed flashes and great music in the comic, too. Even if you don't care for the comic, at least the series's (http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/track/derse-dreamers) music (http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/track/savior-of-the-waking-world) is really (http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/track/time-on-my-side) enjoyable! (http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/track/havoc) I think I remember a secret on here where the op didn't care for the comic but loved the music.

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
We're a mixed bunch, just like everybody. Some of us are a bunch of annoying little brats that NEED TO TALK ABOUT HOMESTUCK EVERY MINUTE, some of us are pretty reasonable and can keep our Homestuck boners in our pants until it's an actually appropriate subject. It's cool if you don't like it. How does that affect the people who do?

But for future reference: "I like you, but I'm not really interested in [your fandom]. I'm really happy you're so excited about it, but it's just not my thing and hearing about it all the time is kinda getting on my nerves. Once in a while is fine, but don't you think you'd have more fun talking about [your fandom] with somebody else who's really into it too?" And if they don't get the message, start talking constantly about a fandom they hate until it sinks in.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Homestuck boners is possibly the best way I've ever seen it put.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
People who obsess to a ridiculous level over ANYTHING get annoying really fast. You could be obsessing overtime about my favorite series ever and I'd get just as annoyed.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-07 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
-pats- I know the feeling OP...People I know who wouldn't stfu about Dr. Who/try to force me to watch it are the reason I won't even try to watch it.
