He still gave the consent, and not because he was being forced under the threat of death or anything. Even that nasty king in the first story of Berserk(I can't remember his name)chose not to sacrifice his daughter even though he was also manipulated and under the threat of eternal damnation.

Yeah, but Griffith's life was manipulated from before he was even born. The king's wasn't.

Not to mention Griffith was pretty much broken down mentally and physically and at the point of suicide when he made the deal.

I disagree that all his decisions were the result of manipulations, but honestly? If that is the case then that takes all the interest out of Griffith's character for me. He's an interesting character because he's so successful in being both sincere and manipulative. If he's doesn't have to take responsibility for the way he turned out or for any decisions he makes, then nothing he does has any meaning for him as a character. It makes his whole story dull because it's not his story. Regardless of his manipulation, he had agency and he even considered his alternatives before he made the decision to sacrifice his group for power.

Besides, manipulated or not, his actions still made him a monster. Idgaf why he made the decision, I'm not gonna sympathize with anyone who allowed his allies to be murdered in such a grotesque way just to achieve his man-dreams.

Based on what IOE said, everybody's life is manipulated that deeply.

I mean, look, Idea is supposed to be God. A cynical outlook, but God nonetheless. Most generally agree in this world that even if choice is an illusion, because it's one we live by, we still have agency in our choices and how we conduct ourselves.

I think we can hold a comic to the same standard. Even if he was always going to make that choice, from the perspective of those around him, it was his choice to make. And with all those that died for it, it's probably something Guts would hold against Griffith more then the big heart with eyes.

Even at the end, the God Hand made it clear Griffith had to make a conscious decision.

Exactly. That's why I think responsibility has to be all or nothing - either we believe in the idea that people can exercise judgment and control over their own actions, or we believe they are helplessly caught in the stream of causality and have no other choice based on their circumstances. You can believe fate and circumstance influence decisions but still hold people accountable for finally making the choice.
