These fandoms are ridiculously boring to me lol except maybe the ME fanarts.

If I hadn't fallen in love with one of the characters from one of these games (yeahah, that's sad...) I would totally agree with you!

The thing about the video game fandom, though, is that it's not dominated by women (particularly Western video games). Fandom usually is. The majority of the fandom is not involved with fanfiction or the like. The reason you're not seeing tons of femmeslash is because the fandom isn't mostly women--and, let's be honest here, most women in fandom prefer het or M/M.

Please note this isn't a derogatory statement about fandom being dominated by women. I'm more or less surprised that OP seems to think that that's the case here, though. I would be happy to see the representation of women to be larger.

In any case, I think it's a bit silly that you seem to believe that fandom begins and ends with fanfiction and shipping. A lot of the discussion for these fandoms are dominated by lore, decision-making, and talking about companions. Shipping is less of a big deal because Shepard is allowed to indiscriminately have everyone (one at a time).

Or Hawke, the Warden, and the Dragonborn.

Skyrim fandom needs more gay tbh

[identity profile] roadconezombie.livejournal.com 2012-05-13 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it funny that Skyrim fandom doesn't have much of a gay presence, considering so many gamers I know of pair their character with an NPC of the same sex. My female dragonborn got loved up with Jenassa, and I have happy little headcanons about their blissful marital relations, despite the fact that they're both depraved blood-thristy assassins. I wouldn't imagine any interest in stories about an OC, though, so I don't write up these headcanons. Perhaps others feel the same; many probably have gay dragonborn protagonists but they don't want to proliferate the fandom with stories about their OCs.

That's pretty much the Bioware fandom for you. Finding a good fic of any sexuality in a sea of shit Mary Sue Shepard/Hawke fuck fantasies is akin to looking for the Holy Grail.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I love the shit out of Dragon Age, especially Dragon Age 2 (come at me, bros) - mainly because the characters are so amazing. But I have this thing where I only play gay relationship, be it gay dudes or lesbians, and straight romances don't do much for me. And c'mon, Fenris is practically a dictionary definition bishounen, I would've thought there'd be so much slash of him. I'm kind of shocked that the fanworks are predominantly het... and I agree at self-insert. If I read something with Hawke, it has to be Marian or Garrett Hawke, their canon default names, and they have to look like their canon default selves. Otherwise, yeah, I feel like I'm reading a Mary Sue/Gary Stu.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I see what you mean? I would've thought there would be a mix sexualities especially in Skyrim (you could marry anyone no matter of gender for god's sake!) then I find out it's mostly het..I'm out.

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
that's why i generally only read fic with the default hawke/shep. then i don't have the "but wait it's not MY character, that isn't how it went!" feeling so much. i've only just started playing skyrim so i can't comment on that fandom, but there are some really great writers in the bioware fandoms, and lots of m/m and some f/f if you look.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Any recs? I only hang out on the kink memes and there's not a lot of m/m or f/f?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
what pairing do you like?

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
well spicyshimmy (http://archiveofourown.org/users/spicyshimmy/pseuds/spicyshimmy) writes a lot of wonderful long stories for ME and DA, so there's her, the MShep/Kaidan tumblr (http://fyeahmshepkaidan.tumblr.com/tagged/fanfic) which posts links to new fic (very hit or miss, but i wouldn't know of any of these otherwise), the Steve Cortez/James Vega tumblr (http://fuckyeahcortezvega.tumblr.com/) has some fic too. i've liked the writing that i've read of highcastle (http://high0castle.tumblr.com/) too.

if i weren't so lazy i'd unprivate my diigo bookmarks but i can't find a way to mass public them, so that'd be a huge PITA.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
These are great! TY :)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-15 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
But... there is no default Shep. I mean, whenever I write ME fic I call her Jane and if I ever mention any physical traits I use her (old) default characteristics, but then before we even leave the stuff that's on the character creation scenes she immediately veers away from a ton of other people's Sheps if there's ever even a passing mention of her origin or past career. (Or, for that matter, but the fact that she's a "her" instead of a "him")

I mean, I suppose you could say that a default Shepard is someone who never veers even the tiniest bit away from their mission even to help people out and makes what are widely considered the worst choices at every turn (except, oddly, when it comes to destroying the Collector Base) if you go by what happens if you start ME2 and 3 without importing a save, but that would...

...Okay, I would actually get a kick out of reading a few stories featuring no-import Shepard, but I don't think she'd be that interesting for long.

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2012-05-15 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
when people say "default hawke/shep" they generally just mean physically. that's all that i need to separate the fiction from my playthrough to enjoy it.

[identity profile] anonlulz.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Most game fandoms are about SI.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
You could always read the fic that pairs up two (or more...) NPCs.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think that the self inserts mostly show through the names - I've seen some incredibly typical over-the-top Mary-Sue names, it's actually amusing.

I mostly hate the people who try to force their ideal playthrough down other people's throats. As in "But Fenris only belongs with MY female self insert Hawke and all others are wrong and evil" and those who go "Noooo my Fenfen is not gay he is only in love with my f!Hawke" (which is silly because Gaider said he wrote Fenris with a male LI in mind)- really, play your game that way if you want, write your self insert fic, pair Fenris up with Isabela, I don't care! Just don't try to tell me that my playthrough is any less valid just because I don't like your preferred romances.
