This movie is rapidly convincing me that everyone is sexist.

This movie? Why?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-13 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
the fuck you on about m8

Everyone loves her. get real

Why? Because there were so few female characters? Or because the main female character is given a hint of a romance with one of the male characters, while the other female character was fairly side-lined?

This may sounds awful, but honestly - I don't mind all that. The Avengers have always been male-heavy; the films have the comics as their source, even feminist-friendly director Joss Whedon can't decide to put more female characters into the mix, because it just wouldn't make sense. Marvel has spent years establishing these characters; and it's finally paid off in the Avengers. You can't introduce new characters when you have ensemble pieces; and if you do, then you have to accept that you won't get as much time to develop their characters as you would by giving them their own movies, or giving them cameo roles in other films in the Marvel universe.

The romance thing... well,I think it's a take it or leave it matter. Black Widow even denies that she has feelings for Hawkeye, claiming her interest in his welfare to be down to a debt. In fact the most romantic character in the film could easily be Tony. There is plenty of material for shipping in this film regardless of gender; whether it be for Black Widow/Hawkeye, Tony/Pepper, Thor/Hulk, Steve/Coulson, whatever.

Yeah, I saw her relationship with Hawkeye as more platonic, really. They're teammates, more so than anyone else. None of Marvel's movies so far have been exactly subtle with romance, so if those two were snogging, they were being really sneaky.

Then again, I might just really like the idea of a platonic male-female friendship that doesn't end in sex.

And when he's calling her "nat", she's calling him "hawkeye" (there at the end, when she's riding the alien flying gizmo), which ... IDK, that doesn't really strike me as I'M GOING DOWN WITH THIS SHIP, you know? She just strikes me as the type who's not interested in relationships at ALL.

And honestly, I like it that way. I mean, they have chemistry, but I only see them as really close friends.

That's how I saw them too. I could really get into them in a bff sense. I liked their dynamic. It could go down the romance route, but it doesn't have to and I hope it doesn't. But, I'd love to see more of their partnership/friendship.

Personally I LIKED that there weren't really any obligatory love interests. I hate when characters get together like *SNAP.* I enjoy their relationships much more when there's a build up to it, the tension there, and I came out shipping Natasha/Clint pretty hard because of it! I think it's a big reason I usually slip slash couples, though, because there's always chemistry and it builds because a lot of shows won't let two male characters get together. But if it's a man and a woman, they HAVE to make out. And a lot of the time it's just forced, it's a staple. Like any action movie ever, the guy saves the girl and then they get together... they might not even know each other that well! And I hate that.

I also enjoy M/F just being friends. Usually it's the ones that get together, though, are the ones I wish had stayed friends. But Clint/Natasha? Unf.

The only example I've seen of this is one person who ships all the male avengers together but doesn't ship Natasha with anyone and barely even acknowledges her. But hey, that's their preference. Personally, I LOVE HER.

I haven't really gotten too deep into this fandom, so maybe it exists. But it's going to always be there if there's a big enough crowd. :(
