This. To me it's basically saying, "You are not allowed to feel emotion. Just suck it up and take what ever punches you get no matter how bloody and bruise you become."

It's inhumane and without compassion and empathy. And then you turn around and expect the person you just said that to, to have compassion and empathy back. That's not how it works.

yeaaaaah. because you aren't poor or idk with other serious problems, you cannot complain about stuff? pffffffft.

the quoted text in this article (http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/11/whats-wrong-with-firstworldproblems/248829/) expresses it far better than i ever could.

Can you imagine if someone had the cojones to actually to pull that sort of "you can't complain because you are white and rich" stuff on someone in real life?

Like going up to Steve Jobs just before he died painfully from cancer and say, "You have no right to complain about anything. You are a rich, white American male. People have it worse off than you."

I wonder what the reaction from the public would be.

Good one.

I remember seeing an argument in a thread on F!S a while back concerning a secret about anxiety disorders, and some guy was trying to say that unless you are living in a third world country, you are not allowed to complain about ANYTHING, because people in third world countries will ALWAYS have it worse.

As if (like another comment upthread pointed out) intersectionality doesn't exist. You can be white and also be persecuted for your gender, your sexuality, your religion, your physical appearance, your mental status. PoC being oppressed doesn't mean that if you're white you are automatically NOT oppressed in other ways.

You are so very right, anon. I always wonder, are these people oblivious to the gap between what they preach and what they practice? Or do they honestly think that they are entitled to receive consideration they're unprepared to give?

every time i've heard people say "white people problems" they have been white people poking fun at themselves for having problems that aren't really that bad. obviously if you're telling someone all your life's issues and they respond with "white people problems lol" they are an asshole, but uh. i've never heard of that happening.

[identity profile] hiyami.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
For the poking fun, I usually saw "Third world problems" used, which makes more sense. Because hey, would you know, there are non-white people who are wealthy and healthy too! And they have the right to drop perfect tears of sadness when their local Starbucks run out of Hazel syrup, too (which is the sort of "problem" people refer to when mocking their own kind of third world problem).

I associate the "white people problems" expression more to the "you and your priviledges mean you have to shut your mouth even if you lost your job, had your children die and learned you only have 6 months left to live this week" cases.
