Appropriation when related to 1st world countries makes me roll my eyes so god damn hard.

Pretty sure Britain, Japan, or Canada will be able to cope with those imperial pig dog americans appropriating our precious cultures.

yeah cause only america does it right?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Mostly, yes. Does that upset you?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
the United States being a "nation of immigrants", yeah.

+1

Which- some places of the country I have lived more than others, grant it- can make for some interesting, memorable experiences.

lmao no. I live in Japan, they appropriate the shit out of all the cultures. just yesterday I saw a giant advertisement with a Japanese girl wearing a chicken feather "Native American" headdress and warpaint on her face.

SJW who say that only america appropriates other cultures have most likely never left america.

"just yesterday I saw a giant advertisement with a Japanese girl wearing a chicken feather "Native American" headdress and warpaint on her face. "

The SJWs wont call her out on that because she's a POC, and to them no POC can do any wrong.

Right there with you, and I'd've added France and Germany to the list.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
lol I don't think any British (or other 1st world) person has ever complained about appropriation of their culture, they wouldn't have a right to either.
Just look at Lucky Charms, Irish people give precisely zero fucks about them.

I've seen it happen more then you would imagine. Then again I spend a lot of time on terrible activist blogs.

Though you do see it more often with people acting the 'appropriation' of say Japan (highest GDP in the world says what).

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Thats probably just because they're not white. In other words, apparently only white people can appropriate.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-14 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen somebody accuse Disney of appropriating Scottish culture for Brave. So it happens.

[identity profile] natural-blue-26.livejournal.com 2012-05-15 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The same person probably complained before that their culture wasn't showcased in the Disney Princess line-up somewhere else previous to Brave being made.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-15 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly plenty of the SJWs believe that if it's mocking or derogatory to 'white folks' then it's perfectly ok for it to exist.

The sad reality is that this is starting to catch on, outside of confines of LJ....and it's not good at all.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-05-14 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, although I can see why appropriation of Japanese cultural things by Americans might upset a Japanese American who has faced racism in the US and whose parent or grandparent was in an internment camp for being Japanese.

I can, but surely the same applies to Americans (or especially Australians) in Japan.

I don't know, if we include that the term quickly becomes rendered so broad as to be meaningless.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-15 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
All cultures have and are constantly changing, therefore there is no such thing as cultural appropriation - unless you pretend to be from a culture that you're not.
But being inspired by a culture - that's just how it is, and always has been.
