I just got back from seeing the avengers and I have to say Natasha is one of the best female representations I've seen in an otherwise dude-oriented movie.

Seriously, playing loki, taking on brainwashed!Clint, closing the gate, generally kicking SO much ass and taking names without male assistance aside from a bit of ~teamwork? All without using 'feminine wiles' too? So much win. She might not have a BIG personality, but she was subtle, deadpan and headstrong, and I loved the bits of vulnerabilty and fear we saw in her when Bruce began to change whilst she was trapped.

Idk I just loved her more as the movie went on and it makes me sad anyone would label her useless when she was genuinely such a key part of the team, which makes her being just a human all the more impressive.

Yeah, that little bit of vulnerability made her really well-rounded, I thought. It kept her from being a stone-cold stereotypical tough chick, and showed that there's a real person in there who knows when she's in deep trouble. I wonder how they would have done it if one of the male characters had been trapped with him instead, like Tony without his suit, or even Nick Fury. Would they have opted to show that fear, or would they have made it more "welp, gotta deal with this guy now"? Just thinking out loud... :)

I like how the movie didn't shy away from having her actually getting physically hurt, so she didn't come off as a generic STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER

Of course I like how all the superheroes expressed actual PAIN when they got beat on, I hate it when I see an action movie where everyone's beating the shit out of each other and nobody seems to actually feel any pain or get actually hurt in the process

I thought it would have been nice if they had expressed more pain. Aside from Cap getting tired for a minute at one point, a couple shots of people clutching wounds for 2 seconds, and Tony falling from space it was just a non-stop punch-a-thon where the magnificent invulnerability of everyone involved was never thrown into doubt. They did more damage to each other than they were dealt by the enemies that were supposed to be threatening.
