I had honestly not heard a thing about this, so now I'm sitting here with nearly-visible question marks floating over my head. :)

Way back when (in the regular continuity) Natasha was a Russian spy sent to steal all of Stark Industries secrets (the usual "Red" threat) and being a beautiful woman and the Black Widow, seducing Tony was a very large part of that. There is also a big love triangle with her, Tony and her minion at the time, Clint (Hawkeye). But yes, she was originally introduced as Iron Man's Femme Fatale villain.
In the Ultimate Universe (a reworking from the early 2000s that Marvel did that was similar to DC's New 52, but without deleting the original canon), Natasha actually is with Tony for quite some time. They're engaged, he builds her a suit... it really doesn't end well on any level though.
So yeah, there's a ton of canon basis for Tony/Natasha. No doubt about that at all.
