I don't necessarily consider RDJ "ugly" but I've been watching a lot of his movies since I was a kid (Chances Are, Heart and Souls, Soapdish, etc.) and I have just NEVER found him attractive. I liked it better when I could say that and have no one care as opposed to now where it seems to be a crime with some people if you're not even the slightest bit attracted to him.

I mean, everyone has different tastes, sure, but at the Marvel Marathon I was just sitting there watching Iron Man for the fiftieth time going "goddamn, I'd hit that gorgeous motherfucker like a screen door in a hurricane." I find him pretty attractive. He's one of the few actors I like who can pull off facial hair (mmn, and Chris Hemsworth). But then, everybody doesn't have to have a general consensus on what is attractive, and it's okay you don't like him. :)

Interestingly, I was never attracted to him per say - I didn't dislike him or anything, I just didn't have much of an opinion either way - until Iron Man, and now it's almost to the point of distraction. I can't watch any of the films without stopping every so often to think, damn... I would not say no to a piece of that action.

For me a lot of his attractiveness comes from what a goddamned good actor he is. No matter what character he plays he has this amazing ability to make him interesting and likable. That's why when I just see pictures of him I don't find him that handsome, but when I watch him in movies as he brings characters to life I fall for those characters (DiCaprio is another actor that has that ability.)

Don't worry OP, I find him ugly too. I also find the actors for Harry and Snape ugly, along with Loki (creepy and ugly!) um what else has come out recently where they stood out in their ugly to me...hm. I don't see many movies, so I can't bring others to mind.

Granted if anyone asks in RL I'll say he's "not my type" - but I'm really thinking is how unattractive and ugly they look to me.

I don't swing that way, but I must admit that he is objectively attractive and I find his giant anime eyes quite endearing.

But seriously, I've found a lot of people fandom folks are attracted to are found attractive for their personalities or the characters they play which then seems to transfer itself to their physical appearances. RDJ is best known for playing a rogueish, snarky charismatic asshole playboy with the whole genius thing that seems to be a running theme in fandom heartthrobs (Sherlock) so he could probably be 50% less physically attractive and still have legions of panty-throwing fans.
