I use BBC!Sherlock to explain my "mind palace" which I don't really call that, I just never knew anyone did it the same way as me and then I saw Sherlock standing around waving his hands around to make connections and I went "OMG I do that too!"
(Off course he is like a million times smarter than me, but the principle still stands)

Anyway, good for you, OP. I myself have AVEN to thank.

Disclaimer: I'm about as far from being a Moffat stan as one can get.

You now what, though? For all the shit Moffat (rightfully) gets for this, at least his comments suggest he understands asexuality is an orientation, not a choice. Benedict Cumberbatch has said Sherlock is asexual because "he was burned by a woman" And in an interview (http://swissmarg.livejournal.com/114645.html) I read today, he said "Sherlock's asexual until he meets Irene Adler". ... That's not how it works!! Again, at least Moffat seems to realize that asexuals can't just flip a switch and decide they want sex nao plz1! ~_~

Moffat did not explain why he thinks Asexuals are not interesting, or anything else Sherlock might have in common in a monk. Sherlock's asexuality has never been cannon. Doyle wrote the original stories long before the creation of Asexual communities.

Well at least he knows that asexuality is not a choice, unlike Ben /facepalm

Yeah, exactly.
A lot of people have jumped on the "not the choice of an asexual" comment as him saying asexuality is choice, but if you read he whole thing he's not. He's saying Sherlock's characterization is the choice of a monk; i.e., he's like a monk, not an asexual.
...
I'm not explaining it well. But, yeah...

(Anonymous) 2012-05-17 03:09 am (UTC)(link)I really wish that I had an equivalent to Sherlock when I was younger. I spent my whole teen years thinking there was something wrong with me for not wanting sex or ever having been sexually attracted to anyone. It wasn't until I was in my early twenties that I finally discovered the word "asexual". It was such a relief.
If Sherlock is helping other people realise what they are, and pointing them to the right places to research it more, then that's wonderful.

But yeah, I feel like someone should make a basic "how to make fandom secrets that are legible and don't make everybody's eyes bleed" tutorial ...

(Anonymous) 2012-05-17 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)It's probably been said before, but telling an asexual that their orientation does not exist or that they "can't get laid" is equivalent to telling, say, a gay man that there is no such thing as homosexuality and that he just can't get a woman. It's cruel and it's not funny.
That being said, OP: I'm glad you found a fandom that helped you come to terms with your orientation. I spent years thinking, "Oh well, I guess I'm just a maladjusted freak!" before a psychiatrist introduced the term "asexual" to me and I was able to do research and realize that there are people like me and it's not just a personal defect.
