I can understand. Sherlock helped me come out and explain asexuality to my parents, with brilliant results.
I'm glad the show created such a fandom, and that it helped you too! :)

lol asexuals

Lol hetero/homo/bisexuals.

It's great that the show helped you!

I use BBC!Sherlock to explain my "mind palace" which I don't really call that, I just never knew anyone did it the same way as me and then I saw Sherlock standing around waving his hands around to make connections and I went "OMG I do that too!"

(Off course he is like a million times smarter than me, but the principle still stands)

[identity profile] saya22.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I can relate so much to Sherlock as an ace (his conversation with John and Angelo's is pretty much my many conversations with my friends when I try to explain that I don't want neither bf nor gf nor marriage), so it's weird that Moffat thinks that asexuals are boring to write about.

Anyway, good for you, OP. I myself have AVEN to thank.

Moffat thinks asexuals are boring to write about? I'm curious, is this something he said?

Disclaimer: I'm about as far from being a Moffat stan as one can get.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.

You now what, though? For all the shit Moffat (rightfully) gets for this, at least his comments suggest he understands asexuality is an orientation, not a choice. Benedict Cumberbatch has said Sherlock is asexual because "he was burned by a woman" And in an interview (http://swissmarg.livejournal.com/114645.html) I read today, he said "Sherlock's asexual until he meets Irene Adler". ... That's not how it works!! Again, at least Moffat seems to realize that asexuals can't just flip a switch and decide they want sex nao plz1! ~_~

Ah, thanks for the clarification. NGL, I find it kinda weird that Moffat of all people has a better grasp of asexuality than Benedict Cumberbatch...

Ugh, Ben. I like him but sometimes he says things like this that makes me facepalm. Plus original Sherlock doesn't give a shit about Irene and vice versa, and BBC!Irene is nothing special intellectual-wise.

”It's the choice of a monk, not the choice of an Asexual. If he was Asexual, there would be no tension in that, no fun in that – it's someone who abstains who's interesting. There's no guarantee that he'll stay that way in the end – maybe he marries Mrs Hudson. I don't know”! said Moffat.

Moffat did not explain why he thinks Asexuals are not interesting, or anything else Sherlock might have in common in a monk. Sherlock's asexuality has never been cannon. Doyle wrote the original stories long before the creation of Asexual communities.

Well at least he knows that asexuality is not a choice, unlike Ben /facepalm

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well at least he knows that asexuality is not a choice

Yeah, exactly.

A lot of people have jumped on the "not the choice of an asexual" comment as him saying asexuality is choice, but if you read he whole thing he's not. He's saying Sherlock's characterization is the choice of a monk; i.e., he's like a monk, not an asexual.
...
I'm not explaining it well. But, yeah...

The Angelo's conversation so echoed my trying to explain being ace to my best friend WAY back when we first met that the both of us totally cracked up seeing it, like, "Wait, we did that!"

I feel like this secret is getting kind of...redundant.

[identity profile] discord.livejournal.com 2012-05-17 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think I need glasses. It took me a long time to read this secret; the words were too blurry.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-17 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
It's great that the show helped you realise what you are.

I really wish that I had an equivalent to Sherlock when I was younger. I spent my whole teen years thinking there was something wrong with me for not wanting sex or ever having been sexually attracted to anyone. It wasn't until I was in my early twenties that I finally discovered the word "asexual". It was such a relief.

If Sherlock is helping other people realise what they are, and pointing them to the right places to research it more, then that's wonderful.

Why the hell is the font so damn blurry on this secret?

Bad (i.e. too high) JPEG compression.

But yeah, I feel like someone should make a basic "how to make fandom secrets that are legible and don't make everybody's eyes bleed" tutorial ...

1. Avoid saving your secret as a JPEG/JPG.
2. If you must save your secret as a JPEG, AVOID RED TEXT AT ALL COSTS.

DEATH TO BLURRY RED TEXT!

I'm going to have to say that I think asexuality in the media has done more harm than good. Just look at any secret related to asexuality, and there'll be at least one "Oh, how cute, you think you're asexual!" comment. I'm not sure if it's because there is a higher concentration of asexual people in fandom or what, but since it comes up so often, there is a lot of reflexive eye-rolling and "ace-wank". There is increased awareness now, but not all of it is positive. I was happier when most people were unfamiliar with the concept and could have it explained to them on a case-by-case basis. Now you have a group dead-set on believing that asexuals are attention whores or just can't get a man/woman.

It's probably been said before, but telling an asexual that their orientation does not exist or that they "can't get laid" is equivalent to telling, say, a gay man that there is no such thing as homosexuality and that he just can't get a woman. It's cruel and it's not funny.

That being said, OP: I'm glad you found a fandom that helped you come to terms with your orientation. I spent years thinking, "Oh well, I guess I'm just a maladjusted freak!" before a psychiatrist introduced the term "asexual" to me and I was able to do research and realize that there are people like me and it's not just a personal defect.
