I agree with you on this, and it's the main reason I'm going to miss GCB so much.

The media is full of such relationships between two guys, but for it to be a guy and girl without it being romantic is so rare...it definitely annoys me.

"GCB"?

A(n awesome, IMO) TV show that was just recently canceled after one season.

Which characters are you talking about?

Unless I'm totally forgetting character(s)/a relationship, I can't think of anyone from that show that fits this. The only male/female relationships that weren't romantic either weren't close enough friends to fit this, it ended up turning romantic in the end, or both.

[identity profile] lady-wormtongue.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Emma Peel! I love that lady so hard. And Steed is such a perfect gentleman. Now that I think of it, they're probably one of my favorite platonic duos ever.

Pete and Myka - Warehouse 13
Mac and Stella - CSI NY (I know lots of people shipped them, but the show never did)

But yeah, male/female best friendships aren't as common as I'd like either.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Actually on second thought, I don't think Mac and Stella quite fit the pattern you're describing here. They were close, but not the attached-at-the-hip type best friends.

Pete and Myka are though. When the show first started I figured they were setting them up as a romantic pairing, but I'm so glad they didn't go that way.

Or, for that matter, between two ladies. Usually if women have any non-familial relationships they're in a flock of catty friends. I can name a bajillion dude TV/film partnerships or BFFs, but for girls it's Cagney and Lacey and, uh....

....

...uh, give me another half an hour, I'm sure I'll think of one or two more. Gilmore Girls! ...No, wait, I said "non-familial." Hmm.

Of course, that would involve centering the plot around two female characters. Which. Probably not likely to happen too often.

Parks and Recreation has a pretty good female platonic relationship.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Leslie + Sweet and Beautiful Ann = Queens of my heart. <3 (iz talentless and doesn't know how to make a proper LJ heart).

Also I love how they are best friends and Leslie carries on this awesome romantic story too. Too often it seems like if a woman loves a man he is the only thing she cares about in the world and all her friends can go suck it (I wonder if that's also a factor in the male-female friendships turning romantic thing -- like the writers think that they can't pair up the woman with a guy other than her best friend because then she obviously has to totally abandon her best friend or some bullshit in order to be in a serious relationship).

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I love platonic male-female friendships that don't turn into romance. I also like when they do depending on the chemistry, but I always have tension regarding plantonic male/female friendships who don't have the right chemistry, because I'm just waiting for the show/movie to shove them together anyway. And most of the time I'm right and I just groan. I'm really glad 30 Rock pretty much came right out and said "this is never gonna happen between Liz and Jack" at some point.
Because a guy and a girl can't have a relationship without it turning romantic, right? In the same way that mainstream male friendship will pretty much never turn into romance, regardless of the chemistry portrayed between the two characters.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I usually (not always, but usually) hate it when two established platonic male-female friends turn romantic, not because I dislike romance or anything, but because I love those rare platonic friendships, and turning them into romance destroys them --- because now they're romantic and therefore not a platonic friendship by definition. Even if the romantic couple that ensues isn't bad, I still usually prefer the platonic friendship simply because romances happen all over the place and there's more than enough around to satisfy me, while platonic friendships are rare and I want to salvage every one I can find. I like my romantic couples to either have visible romantic hints from the get-go or for romance to develop between two characters as they get close. That way, I don't get blindsided. There's something, I dunno, safe and comforting about a friendship that you know won't turn romantic. I don't like that phrasing because it makes it seem like romance is bad, which is not what I mean at all, but I guess I'm just sick of just how often the "feeeeeelings!" thing pops up unexpectedly and throws everything off course, often for no satisfying reason.

I have the opposite problem with same-sex friendships obviously, because two friendship becoming a gay or lesbian couple is really really rare while friendships are everywhere. I'm not a huge slasher who slashes everything in sight, but I'm generally more positive about the idea of long-time platonic male-male or female-female friendships turning romantic than long-time male-female ones.

Oh one more peeve -- that if a man and a woman who are friends flirt or show any physical attraction, they automatically have deeper complex romantic feelings. I really liked how Jack and Liz, as well as Morgan and Garcia on Criminal Minds and CJ and Toby on The West Wing can be totally casually flirty without actually wanting to be a couple or being unsatisfied with being "just friends". They're like, the male-female equivalent of two same-sex characters with lots of Ho Yay, but who you wouldn't actually want to see get together in canon.

Today is tl;dr day for me...*sigh*

Don't worry, I get it 100%. It's not about the romance, I think, it's about inevitable change when you want things to just be the way they are. I'm not bracing for a shocking swerve unless I'm expecting it to show up any minute.

I have a lot of fondness for male-female friendships growing into romance (I'm a huge sucker for the Childhood Friends trope) but I really must insist on it being right for the characters and the story, and for there to be buildup first. I get really pissed off by the principle of writers clearly seeing all male-female interaction as inherently UST-filled even when it's not.
Like, I was just with my husband playing Heavy Rain, and both male-female detective pairs inexplicably kiss (or one almost-kiss depending on player choice) at some point late in the story and seriously where the hell did that come from. It wasn't built up at all beyond "he's a man and she's a woman and they've been on an adventure together" and it seemed pretty wrong for the mood. I mean, who gets hot and bothered looking for their dead son's killer?

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, I do love the childhood friends thing. I guess because it feels more purposeful when they develop an attraction as they sexually mature, instead of just "hey I have romantic feelings now".

I'm just tickled to see an "Avengers" secret that is the "Avengers" I always think of first.

[identity profile] ozfroggirl.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. I always get a little excited when I hear people mention the 'Avengers' in that split second before I realise they're talking about those other 'super' Avengers. :D

Same! <3

(Kind of sad that I missed this day.)

I will never get tired of Lassiter and Juliet breaking down the door to save Shawn and Gus in the nick of time. :D I actually relax and feel safer when they're onscreen, almost the way I used to always breathe out in relief when Buffy turned up during a creepy scene in BtVS.

[identity profile] pinkealing.livejournal.com 2012-05-18 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I will admit when I first really got into 30 Rock I wanted Jack and Liz to eventually end up together. I even went looking for some fanfic about them. I ended up reading none of them, after looking around different websites for about a half hour I gave up. Not because all the fics seemed badly written or anything, but because Jack/Liz just felt wrong. I realized to me their relationship on the show was much more satisfying than any portrayal of a romantic/sexual relationship could be.
