UC is the best part of Gundam, of course. My favorite in the franchise will always be 0080.

0080 is my favorite too, even though my favorite Gundam character is Kai Shiden and he's not in it. It's just perfect because Yoshiyuki Tomino had nothing to do with it

I never try to say negative things about AU Gundam but... I haven't really found one I liked yet. And like most Americans my age, Wing was my first Gundam and I watched it religiously on Toonami... but I was just sort of watching it because other people were. I found it kind of boring and confusing. One of these days I'll give it a rewatch though.

But anyway HELL YEAH UC MY PRIMARY FANDOM

Toonami. Everyone watching it. Boring and confusing.

Yup. That's exactly what I'm talking about. Not that UC doesn't have its boring series and WTF moments, too. But on the whole, Wing feels like a pale shade of the original.

Mostly, though, living over there gave me a whole different perspective on the Western reaction to/love for anime. I just kind of wish people here could see what it's like over there, 's'all. Completely different.

(Alas, I have no UC-related icon yet, but this is close enough.)

While I still have a soft spot for Wing purely for nostalgia reasons (like so many of us in the Western world, it's what got me into Gundam), I still think there's a whole lot out there that's far better, especially UC. However, I do think some of the other AUs deserve a little more love than they've gotten from the Japanese side of things.

Which reminds me...one of these days, I need to pull out my Zeta DVDs and finally watch it all the way through. I loved what I saw of it, and I hate that I still haven't gotten around to finishing it.

OP here. From what I saw in Japan, those other AUs are also present in pop culture, just not to the same extent as the original series/continuity. It's sort of like Star Wars or Star Trek over there. But then, there's a lot of the otaku/anime culture that's never made it here to the States and probably never will, and it's sort of unbelievable how wide and diverse and jam-packed a thing it is. They've all got their little nitches... but the original gets the best treatment.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm likely in the minority, but I really can't stand any of the UC Gundam series, save 08th MS Team. I find them all really, really boring.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe we're a minority, but at least you're not alone in your opinion. I just can't see the appeal.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I started out as a Wing fangirl, and when I found out that there were *other* gundam series, I had to check them out. After the 5th or 6th one I'd tried watching and hadn't liked, I pretty much gave up on the rest of gundam.

I really liked Gundam Wing, but thanks for the rec. I may enjoy UC, too. :)

P.S. Am I the only one who has G Gundam feels even now? I think it aired in the US not long after Wing and I still remember it fondly. The animated chibi Gundam, though... :P

Sorry, sugar, I can't give a shit, I left Gundams in general behind a long time ago. How's that yearning for superiority working out for you?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's kind of a no-brainer because UC's basis is well-written and it spawned a bunch of unique anime/manga/novels so there's something in it for everyone. However, it has become massive and parts of it are out of reach for non-Japanese viewers/readers so naturally Western fans find it easier to watch shorter AUs. It's a shame, but nothing can be done about it at this point.

idk. I lived in Japan and still like GW.

[identity profile] darkmanifest.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
You had to move to another country to discover the UC timeline? They aired tons of different Gundam shows on Cartoon Network from the original all the way up to Gundam SEED. I watched them all and still preferred GW. Though I'm sure the UC fandom is superior, because the GW fandom was fucking ridiculous when I was in it.

[identity profile] freyallster.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
*gasp* How dare you.

But really, uh, okay? Pity me then. I started out hating Gundam Wing as the representation of all Gundam, without really knowing what the others were about. But it was SEED that made me actually find it interesting enough to get into all the others. It will always remain my favorite, along side an equal place with 08th MS Team.

UC might have the most expanded and intricate world setting, and it may be full of history and be the original, but everyone is going to have their own idea of what kind of character is interesting to them. And I think that's what makes Gundam as a franchise great. There are SO MANY to choose from.

donutcurr, I still love Gundam Wing and your feelings of superiority can step the fuck off

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
There are few fans more annoying than obnoxious UC Gundam fans who think that AU Gundam series are so shit and people who don't worship UC Gundam at the altar are poor ignorant fools.

Good lord, if you tell them that you think Gundam 0079 was boring as shit and you hated all of the characters to the point it made watching worse. Especially Amuro. Ugh.

/rolls eyes

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, c'mon. They've all got redeeming qualities and shit aspects to them. It's entirely possible to like both, and liking one more than the other doesn't automatically mean you're smarter or stupider than someone else.

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaaaand I figured out that we can all like our own favorite toys without being dicks to each other years ago, without going to Japan. Do I get a cookie?

Some people like UC. Some people like the AUs. Some people like both. And that is okay. Shit like this is why I don't have as much fun in the Gundam fandom as some of my other fandoms. This fandom has always been really bad with dividing fans against themselves, and that's sad, imo. We all have our own favorite space soap opera with giant robots. Give the others a chance, if you wanna, but if they don't work for you, they don't work. Being a condescending jerk about your favorite space soap opera with giant robots is only going to ensure that you have fewer friends to play with.
