If you put in less work than the superfan who does real all the comics, buys the superhero encyclopedia and spends more time than you on their fandom hobby, then, yes, you are less of a fan WHEN COMPARED to the other person.

Don't try to act like you are just as big as a fan. You're not. You are just a fan. Not a superfan.

And I am tired of fans of the movie being HUGE snobs when it comes to reading the comics. Like it's icky and beneath them. Because heaven forbid you are seen as a comic geek. Movies? All the cool kids are watching it. Comics? Never. For so long the comic book fans of these superhero characters have been mocked and looked down on. So, don't think you can call yourself the same level of fan as comic book readers if you don't read the comics.

Augh, you are my soul sibling. Tyrion is my least favorite POV character in the series (because of him, not because of his larger storyline) for precisely all the reasons you lay out.

And the jokes aren't even good!

IDK, a lot of the guys I see ogled over in fandom are quirky attractive. Granted, in the opposite direction of where you are going- bony with mouse-like faces- but it seems like everyone is losing their shit over Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston (who I think are awesome and talented, so I'm not bashing, they are just not conventionally attractive). Often, men who aren't conventionally attractive get more leeway to become sexy than women who aren't, so there is a big issue with sexism there. However, that doesn't mean that finding quirkier looking guys hot is wrong, or that what those people are doing isn't dickish. There is no right type of person to be attracted to.

Also, I agree with you that Jason Segel is adorable and handsome, and he seems really sweet too!

Hence the reason this is a secret. Thanks for playing!

Sorry, no Black Widow, Coulson or Hulk gifs this time! Haven't stalked the Avengers gif posts in weeks.

Just a question, but is the Avengers movie have the same canon and personalities as the comics?

[identity profile] ooh-mrdarcy.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
But does he talk dirty?

[identity profile] vongroovy.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a fan of both (although I've certainly not read nearly all the comics), but it's ridiculous to say someone can't be a true fan without liking/reading/watching everything. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is its own gorgeous, rich thing, and you don't need the comics to appreciate that. Does comics knowledge occasionally help? Sure. For a recent example, when seeing Avengers with a movie-only fan, the first end credits scene just left her confused. But is comics knowledge necessary? No. To stick with my example, that was a nice little Easter egg for the comics fan, but it'll eventually make sense to my friend too when it's all explained in Thor 2 or wherever it comes up.

Just, ugh, I find this kind of elitism ridiculous in any fandom I've seen it in.

I find the actually pony porn to be weird, but I'll admit some of the humanized stuff can be attractive. It's all about how one presents themselves within the fandom, and respecting that a lot of people are squicked out by this sort of stuff. I think porn of cartoon ponies is strange, but I like some things that others find weird as well, so as long as you don't rub it in other people's face like the bronies do, I don't think there is anything wrong with what you are doing.

I think the reason it feels less magical is because IT IS less magical. That seems to be the running theme in this new series. The spirituality that was so ingrained in the first series, mostly because Aang was a monk and therefore had no problem tapping into the spirit world, is gone from the new series. Now we see a society that has been embraced technology over their spiritual side. Instead seeing bending as way of bridging the real world with the spirit world as well as seeing the connections between the two in every day living, (Think Aang and Zuko having the revelation with the last dragons), bending is nothing more a tool. Or worse, a weapon. It has become so bad even the Avatar is having a hard time tapping that spiritual side of herself.

I have a feeling what we are going to see is the only way Korra is going to fix everything is to return people to spiritualism once more. And find away to bridge the gap between modern technology/society and the spirit world.

Yes. Because Whedon is HUGE comic book geek. (He even wrote for many series such as the X-Men and Runaways.) So, everyone is pretty much how they are in the comics. No one is a 180 from canon.

I get the thing about Data - I do. And I wish that wasn't there - that was the only part of the character that rubbed me the wrong way. But.... I still find her to be much more of an interesting character than Crusher. I don't hate Beverly, but I personally think Diana Muldaur was a better actress than Gates McFadden (Gates' acting gets on my nerves at times). And her more sarcastic attitude in a crew that was always so damned nice all the time made her more fun to me. Plus - I admit it - part of my love for her is the thought that "a female Bones? How is this a bad thing?" LOL.

You think you guys have it tough? I'm looking for the Moran to my Moriarty.

Any takers? Will offer shoes made from dead enemies.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The movie verse has an official Earth number? Cool :)

Personally, I love the movie for giving me a ship that would never exist in 616 or 1610 and for that I totally and absolutelly love it more :D

I feel you, but at the same time, being a Sherlock, I don't feel like I really deserve a John. I mean, at least 75% of the time I would really not need them for anything. It's not fair to want to have someone's complete devotion when I know I could never give return it.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, I'm pretty bad at differentiating between typical and non-typical attractiveness now, because I've always thought I was only attracted to unconventionally attractive guys and now when I find someone hot it's like "oh, other people think he's hot, too? Huh." But yeah, now that I think about it, I'd agree with you. Anyway, yeah, they're both gorgeous. (your icon <333)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked her too, OP. But I never really liked Crusher, so yeah... I also think that her treatment of Data was sometimes not so much simply belittling him, but challenging him in her own way (other times she was just being an ass, but from some of the comments here, you'd think that every time she came into view she told Data to fuck off). Anyway, I found it refreshing to have a character who wasn't such a goody-goody all the time.
