A lot of us in the movie fandom agree with you. Honesty, the only character in the comicsverse that holds my interest is Deadpool. The others are cool, but I prefer them in live-action.

And I don't care if I'm going to hell for that.

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No. At least as far as Hulk, since, last I heard, he and Banner had separated, Hulk was intelligent and Banner was... well, dead. So definitively not the adorkable mess that is Ruffalo's Banner.

I stopped following Iron man during Civil War but that was pre- his movies so I don't know if things have changed a lot.

Steve Rogers hasn't been the 'fish out of temporal waters' since I think 1968, but I couldn't say more since I don't follow his comic.

Loki, at least at the beginning of Fear Itself, was a kid and hero-worshiped his brother Thor. Who after Fear Itself, if I recall correctly, died. Again. (third time for him, I think) Also, Thor and IRon man were not on speaking terms since Tony and Reed and Hank Pym went and cloned Thor...

So yeah, no.

LOL yes, same here. I ended up with reading glasses that gave me headaches. But to this day I still have 20/10 vision. I read in the dark ALL the time when I was a kid to get glasses, too! I know that someday I'm going to regret that, but hey. Kids do weird shit.

she is so cute. I wish she'd been the female protag tbh.

Yup! :3 Forever my favorite idol!

Oh, I recognized Rika! I love IshiYoshi too. Sometimes I wonder about them as well, especially as their friendship is clearly not an act. With as many women who have passed through H!P, at least one has to be bi or gay (same with the 48 family).

YES to all of this. Fantastic points!

Often, men who aren't conventionally attractive get more leeway to become sexy than women who aren't, so there is a big issue with sexism there.

My guess is that this ties into different standards of beauty according to gender... these standards seem to be far more restrictive for women than for men. There's such a huge range for what people who are attracted to men find attractive. You mentioned a few notable examples in your post. A sexy voice seems to go a long way, for instance. And yet the "male gaze" seems to prefer thin young women with big eyes, symmetrical features and huge boobs.

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. All of it. I'd like to enrich my experience, but I don't know where to start, and I don't have enough disposable income to invest in that amount of comics. I love how sprawling the cinematic universe is, and it's managed to be its own accessible canon while keeping to the comics spirit, at least according to the background information I've read.

I don't mean the bare minimum of being considered active, but the amount of activities that are "suggested" you take part in. Contests, 'parties' etc... it just seemed like more work than anything else to be considered a part of the community. It's just my opinion.

Not sexy for most, however Rule 34 must be remembered.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
...Tony/Bruce, by any chance?

I find it amusing, because in 616 I am completely OTP about Tony/Steve and can't ship either of them with anyone else, but in 199999 I ship Tony/everyone. Tony/Bruce was definitely my surprise favourite ship of the Avengers movie though.

lol I stand corrected

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
there is when every new adaptation of anything comes out, actually. It's especially relevant to comic book-based movies because the universes are VERY different, but still, you can be a fan of the LOTR movies without having read the books and vice versa.

[identity profile] ooh-mrdarcy.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. However, DC and Marvel comics are srs bsns to some people; there will be certain people who think they're somehow "better fans" because they know the source material better than you. It doesn't make you any less of a fan if you haven't read the comics IMO, but maybe if you want to avoid getting nerd-stomped you could just say you're a fan of the movies and the characters?
I've read these comics since I was a kid, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's the fact that many older "true" fans will look down on newbies for any reasons they can find. It's petty and unnecessary, but it happens. The best thing you can do is just turn the other cheek.

Never.

No kidding! I really hope she comes back for Thor 2. :3

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohh where can I apply?

My dilemma is which enemies to choose? ...

[identity profile] luxshine.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, Tony/Bruce. I'm absolutely in love with that and am looking for a Tony/Bruce exclusive com (Nothing against the other ships, I just want something easier to navigate! I'm lazy).

In 616, I'm convinced Tony is totally straight for some reason, but I can see Tony/Steve easily, and Steve/Thor could work too, especially after Civil War once both are back alive. And I'm a Bruce/Betty believer for ever and hated PAD for killing her and am not that convinced of Betty as She-RHulk, but in 199999... as soon as Tony greeted Bruce I was like "oh... OH!" and that was it.

What? I haven't seen this movie but that does not look like a child.

Re: Contacts. Sometimes it takes a certain amount of trail and error. The first pair of contacts I had were awful. They were slightly painful and irritating and kept falling out at the least bit of jarring. Turns out they were an improper fit. I had to go through a couple different brands before I actually found some that fit right. If contacts are doing their thing correctly, you shouldn't even feel them at all.

Of course, if you don't want them or just don't care that much then no big deal. I absolutely hate wearing glasses, so I was willing to go through a lot to get to the point of contacts.

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, I love secrets like this. So glad fandom helped out you in life, OP. Keep on being awesome!

I read the first "Twilight" book and I actually wanted to like it since it was recc'd to me before the films came out, but it was impossible to like it. I am a bit scared to read "50 Shades" in fear that it may become a guilty pleasure of mine, so I get what you mean.

[identity profile] pinkealing.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who's sick to death of Twilight secrets?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes what gets you off is the same thing that tweaks your guilt. Sexuality is weird and inconvenient and complicated. Just remember that you aren't hurting anyone, be respectful of other fans who don't like the porny stuff, try to ignore or counteract the misogyny when you encounter it, and let yourself enjoy what you enjoy.

Best of luck.
