YES to all of this. Fantastic points!

Often, men who aren't conventionally attractive get more leeway to become sexy than women who aren't, so there is a big issue with sexism there.

My guess is that this ties into different standards of beauty according to gender... these standards seem to be far more restrictive for women than for men. There's such a huge range for what people who are attracted to men find attractive. You mentioned a few notable examples in your post. A sexy voice seems to go a long way, for instance. And yet the "male gaze" seems to prefer thin young women with big eyes, symmetrical features and huge boobs.

People have done actual studies on this phenomenon and it does seem that women have more varied tastes than men. They think it might (in part) be so that women don't have to fight over the same men.

Hmm, that's interesting. I'll have to look into it.

I would be very, very careful with anything dealing with evolutionary psychology since it is pretty legitimacy problems.

It's more likely that women were socialized to see past looks for men, for men, they are socialized to see looks. It's all from being from a patriarchal society. Woman can be just as shallow as men in regards for looks, but they are far more shamed for expressing that than men are, which gets excuses as their "nature".

Yeah. Evopsych is a nice way for society to assert that it's socialized values are based on SCIENCE and not its own impositions. Of COURSE women are going to value more than "just looks"! Historically, men were not a luxury resource for women the way a pretty wife would be for a man- they were a necessity for survival, beggers can't be choosers, etc.

Also, what men say they want out loud in front of people they want to impress is not necessarily what they actually want.

Conversely women are more likely to look at a man's bank account to judge their worth as a mate where generally men don't.

Women and men judge each other by different standards. News at 11.

[identity profile] queenoftea.livejournal.com 2012-05-20 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you think that is?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-20 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that anon, but its pretty obvious. Thousands of years ago women were the ones who took care of the children, gathered berries and grasses, and took care of the home. Men hunted, protected the women, and made sure they where having babies. Now in the present we still have that hunter gatherer mindset that makes us be picky on a mate by how they can provide for us, a woman who is "sexy" in the traditional way is more fertile and therefore can have more children. A man who has a lot in the bank can sustain a family and protect it if they have some sort of financial crisis, and women want that.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-20 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
There have been recent studies that show women care about a man's resources less in societies where they have better opportunities to earn their own money. There is even evidence that whether men prefer women to be more skinny or plump depends on the economic climate. What is desirable to either sex is not set in stone but rather changes to adapt to the situation.

Also, we're speaking in generalizations. Everyone is different and wants different things, and we're all free to be attracted to or reject each other for any reason we please.

It's interesting that you're so sure about gender roles in prehistory. Do you believe that the reason women are attracted to the colour pink is because berries are pink and cavewomen picked berries?

[identity profile] ivysaur.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
lol, that one really cracked me up considering pink was considered the boys' color and blue was the girls' color up until the 20th century.
