Idk. I agree that you can't judge something until you experience it, but just from the way that people react to the books I think you can say that you dislike what the books are. Or you can make an informed decision from people you trust and decide that the books aren't for you.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)Also, I want to use this place to rant about what almost no one bothers to rant about with FSoF/MotU: the fact that everything sounds British despite being set in America, and they drink waaaaaaay too much for the average American (also a sign of Britain. That is not to say that drinking that much is wrong, just that culturally, Americans tend to be more uptight about alcohol, and definitely do not drink some with every meal, like in the fic. It's the puritan influence combined with the fact that we drive a lot more. I think Robert Pattinson said it once (paraphrased): "I drank in America like I did in Britain, but here they started asking me if I had an alcohol problem.")

Yeah that's 45 minutes of my life I'm never getting back. XD
I can understand why people are attracted to Twilight if they're reading it as an escapism while still acknowledging it's problematic (see most of the romance novels on my bookshelves XD), but there's nothing wrong with disliking it either.

I pre-judged Twilight. I then began reading the book, I waded through a couple of chapters, until I asked myself: Just what the FUCK are you trying to prove???
Really, sometimes you don't have to read shit to know it's shit.

edit: Haven't read Fifty Shades of Grey yet though. I'm trying to hold my judgement for it, but from the snippets I've read it seems too bad even for me (and I LOVE shitty books. Guess how many Sookie Stackhouse Mysteries books I've read? All of them)

I sort of giggled at my students (and at my fellow teachers who were passing the book around in the earlier days) thinking it was silly and stupid. And then when I had chicken pox I ended up reading the first book.
And I loved it.
Yes, there are problems with it. Yes, the writing isn't all that stellar. Yes, there were parts that were creepy in terms of their relationship. But it was fun! I actually read all four of them; I liked Breaking Dawn the best (yes, even with demonbaby and werewolf imprinting and the face-slashed werewolf girlfriend, etc.).
As for Fifty Shades... ugh. I have only read the passages that were posted here and from what I've seen, the porniness isn't all that hot and the grammar and sentence structure and punctuation were horrible to the point of getting in the way of the plot, such as it is. I have no problem saying that I have problems with the structure in the tiny bit that I've read of it. But it wouldn't be honest or fair of me to critique the whole series and say that I hate the plot and characterization in the books, based on only reading snippets.
It's kind of like one of my co-workers who insisted Harry Potter was evil and un-Christian... because others had told her so. Had she read even a tiny bit of it? Nope. Or the people who got up in arms over The Last Temptation of Christ or The DaVinci Code based on what others had said about the plot and characterization and the issues that were raised, etc.
IMHO, it's fine to say that "from what I've heard, the books have issues with / problematic depictions of X, Y, and Z, so I choose not to read them." But to say that you hate them when you haven't read them is not basing your judgement on your actual reaction to them.

Besides I think it could be fun too reading the books with the whole "abusive relationship" thing in mind, because it could give the books a whole new spin, if you know what I mean?

I read the first Twilight book and felt generally kind of "meh" about it, until I peeked ahead in the series and saw how much worse it got.
I couldn't get beyond the first 50-some pages of 50 Shades because the writing was so fucking horrific.
If you really feel you must, then go ahead, but it's pretty safe to say your hatred is already justified.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)The first part of the movie was the typical set up portion, a bit slow but understandable for what was first of a series. Then they went to the scene in the meadow...and I was delighted. I started giggling madly, thinking what a great pieces of crack my sister had taken me to see.
That's when I noticed all the scowls and the frowns of the young girls around me. I elbowed my sib and said, "Um... is this supposed to be serious?"
Apparently it was.... Who knew? (PS - I managed to internalize my snickering for the rest of the movie so I didn't get mugged in the parking lot.)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)OP, there's nothing wrong with enjoying Twilight. There are legitimate reasons to dislike/criticize it, but the same goes for literally anything depending on who you ask. Stop caring so much about what everyone else thinks and let yourself enjoy whatever it is you enjoy. Doesn't have to be Shakespeare to be fun.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)Look, I realize Twilight is pretty problematic, but I read all four books. I'm not even saying that you have to read all four. Just the first. Then I'll listen to what you have to say.

If someone's thinking relationship abuse is normal, that's not because of one shitty book, that's because power dynamics that easily slip into abuse are normalized all the fucking time. If you can picture that you yourself might enjoy reading the books, then maybe they're not such a destructive influence when read by an adult. Also 50 Shades, at least, is definitely not geared toward children from what I've heard.
