IMO Twilight is really THAT bad (I read the first three books after being told the series got better. no.). And I've read enough snippets of 50 Shades of Gray (tampon scene! =D) that even though I haven't read i I can tell the writing isn't the best.

Idk. I agree that you can't judge something until you experience it, but just from the way that people react to the books I think you can say that you dislike what the books are. Or you can make an informed decision from people you trust and decide that the books aren't for you.

Master of the Universe was strangely addictive as a fanfiction. I chose to ignore all the crapp-tasticness of it because it was a guilty pleasure fic. But when I heard it was being published with barely any changes, I was horrified. I cannot believe publishing standards have fallen so low.

Also, I want to use this place to rant about what almost no one bothers to rant about with FSoF/MotU: the fact that everything sounds British despite being set in America, and they drink waaaaaaay too much for the average American (also a sign of Britain. That is not to say that drinking that much is wrong, just that culturally, Americans tend to be more uptight about alcohol, and definitely do not drink some with every meal, like in the fic. It's the puritan influence combined with the fact that we drive a lot more. I think Robert Pattinson said it once (paraphrased): "I drank in America like I did in Britain, but here they started asking me if I had an alcohol problem.")

I agree. I've only read the first Twilight book because I ran out of books at my friend's cottage and she was all, "READ IT, IT'S AMAZING!!!"

Yeah that's 45 minutes of my life I'm never getting back. XD

I can understand why people are attracted to Twilight if they're reading it as an escapism while still acknowledging it's problematic (see most of the romance novels on my bookshelves XD), but there's nothing wrong with disliking it either.

Well, who cares if you like it? You're obviously fully aware of how problematic it is, so there's no harm in a little guilty pleasure. The only reason I hate Twilight is because young girls aren't always aware of how dangerous the message and the relationships are if taken seriously. Otherwise I wouldn't give two shits about some harmless sexy vampire fantasy.

I pre-judged HP, ages ago. I then read the books, fell in love with them.

I pre-judged Twilight. I then began reading the book, I waded through a couple of chapters, until I asked myself: Just what the FUCK are you trying to prove???

Really, sometimes you don't have to read shit to know it's shit.

Would it be so wrong if you DO like it? You can like something while still realizing it's very problematic. Hell, I like Twilight and I've criticized the fuck out of it. I think part of the reason I like it is because it's so awful and strangely entertaining at the same time.

edit: Haven't read Fifty Shades of Grey yet though. I'm trying to hold my judgement for it, but from the snippets I've read it seems too bad even for me (and I LOVE shitty books. Guess how many Sookie Stackhouse Mysteries books I've read? All of them)

I'd say that both books are D/s porn with a M/f dynamic and without explicit consent. That is what makes both of them really problematic as a part of mainstream without the obvious SSC disclaimers that an audience would assume in a kink setting.

If you're aware of that, however, what's the harm?

[identity profile] kateshort.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but as a middle school librarian, I have to say that I do think it's important to read at least *part* of something so that you actually know what you're talking about.

I sort of giggled at my students (and at my fellow teachers who were passing the book around in the earlier days) thinking it was silly and stupid. And then when I had chicken pox I ended up reading the first book.

And I loved it.

Yes, there are problems with it. Yes, the writing isn't all that stellar. Yes, there were parts that were creepy in terms of their relationship. But it was fun! I actually read all four of them; I liked Breaking Dawn the best (yes, even with demonbaby and werewolf imprinting and the face-slashed werewolf girlfriend, etc.).

As for Fifty Shades... ugh. I have only read the passages that were posted here and from what I've seen, the porniness isn't all that hot and the grammar and sentence structure and punctuation were horrible to the point of getting in the way of the plot, such as it is. I have no problem saying that I have problems with the structure in the tiny bit that I've read of it. But it wouldn't be honest or fair of me to critique the whole series and say that I hate the plot and characterization in the books, based on only reading snippets.

It's kind of like one of my co-workers who insisted Harry Potter was evil and un-Christian... because others had told her so. Had she read even a tiny bit of it? Nope. Or the people who got up in arms over The Last Temptation of Christ or The DaVinci Code based on what others had said about the plot and characterization and the issues that were raised, etc.

IMHO, it's fine to say that "from what I've heard, the books have issues with / problematic depictions of X, Y, and Z, so I choose not to read them." But to say that you hate them when you haven't read them is not basing your judgement on your actual reaction to them.

Yeah, I thought that about Twilight. Then I tried reading it. Just accept that some things can be shit without putting yourself through them.

[identity profile] green-glee.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You can always try the movies first (loved them for their sheer badness. Also the actors try really really hard to make you dislike their characters, so you should mostly be safe, haha), but honestly, it wouldn't be bad if you enjoyed the books. I enjoy lots of video games that have problematic content.

Besides I think it could be fun too reading the books with the whole "abusive relationship" thing in mind, because it could give the books a whole new spin, if you know what I mean?

[identity profile] pelespen.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, I could have written this secret. Never fear, anon. They really are that bad.

I read the first Twilight book and felt generally kind of "meh" about it, until I peeked ahead in the series and saw how much worse it got.

I couldn't get beyond the first 50-some pages of 50 Shades because the writing was so fucking horrific.

If you really feel you must, then go ahead, but it's pretty safe to say your hatred is already justified.

I read the first "Twilight" book and I actually wanted to like it since it was recc'd to me before the films came out, but it was impossible to like it. I am a bit scared to read "50 Shades" in fear that it may become a guilty pleasure of mine, so I get what you mean.

My sibling dragged me off to see the first Twilight Movie. Having been very much occupied with RL at that time, I went along thinking "Oh, great, a cool vampire movie will get me out of my slump." I knew nothing about the books and had no idea what the movie was going to be about other than vampires.

The first part of the movie was the typical set up portion, a bit slow but understandable for what was first of a series. Then they went to the scene in the meadow...and I was delighted. I started giggling madly, thinking what a great pieces of crack my sister had taken me to see.

That's when I noticed all the scowls and the frowns of the young girls around me. I elbowed my sib and said, "Um... is this supposed to be serious?"

Apparently it was.... Who knew? (PS - I managed to internalize my snickering for the rest of the movie so I didn't get mugged in the parking lot.)

Okay, I don't even like Twilight, but I think it's silly to bash anything you haven't given a chance. It's a waste of your time, and a waste of time for anyone who is listening to you. If you've read reviews and feel it's not going to be your thing, that's fine, you don't have to read it. But if you're going to put that much energy into hating something, you should know what the hell you're talking about. I don't take haters seriously when they admit they haven't read it, even if their opinions line up with mine.

OP, there's nothing wrong with enjoying Twilight. There are legitimate reasons to dislike/criticize it, but the same goes for literally anything depending on who you ask. Stop caring so much about what everyone else thinks and let yourself enjoy whatever it is you enjoy. Doesn't have to be Shakespeare to be fun.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-19 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the only one who is annoyed with the OP? Anyone who complains about a book without reading it first is a complete jackass. Your opinion is completely invalid. I don't give a shit what you've heard. You're basically just jumping on the bandwagon if you follow something without actually seeing it for yourself.

Look, I realize Twilight is pretty problematic, but I read all four books. I'm not even saying that you have to read all four. Just the first. Then I'll listen to what you have to say.

Watch Alex Reads Twilight. It's close enough.

[identity profile] sparklywalls.livejournal.com 2012-05-20 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I have a friend who loves Twilight but who hated 50 Shades and took this piss out of it. Anything is possible!

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-05-20 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's unfair to be putting stuff like that on the really young girls who don't have much context for what a healthy relationship is, but it really does sound like most adult Twlight fans think that kind of situation is sexy, but aren't deluded about what it would mean in real life. It's a danger kink. Those fans might not be involved in general fandom culture enough to know how to phrase it in a way that you'd get, but that's what it is.

If someone's thinking relationship abuse is normal, that's not because of one shitty book, that's because power dynamics that easily slip into abuse are normalized all the fucking time. If you can picture that you yourself might enjoy reading the books, then maybe they're not such a destructive influence when read by an adult. Also 50 Shades, at least, is definitely not geared toward children from what I've heard.

There is something essential that's gotten screwed up when you value your hate more than you value your happiness. Just saying.

I feel some of this. I read Twilight because I wanted to be able to judge for myself as well, and it really is awful. If you want bite-sized examples of what 50SoG is like, there's 50shadesofsuck.tumblr.com

[identity profile] glo-unit.livejournal.com 2012-05-20 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Just because you like something doesn't mean it was good, I have liked and enjoyed many forms of media that I am able to admit are not technically good. Also just because you enjoy something doesn't mean you can't point out problems with it, on any level.

[identity profile] discord.livejournal.com 2012-05-20 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
You should try to read at least one book, so that you're not mindlessly hating something without deciding for yourself instead of jumping on the bandwagon.
