Don't know what to tell you. My cousin (who hangs around all my fandoms) swore if I read Twilight I would like it. I read the two first books and couldn't go on. It's not even the plain characters or that sort of thing (there's a lot of bad!fic out there that I love). As you say, it's the portrayal of women.

I kept reading and reading, waiting for the moment this teenage girl who thinks she's worth nothing without a guy and whose only dream in life is to become something (someone) else looks in the mirrow and realizes she can be happy being herself... but apparently her happy ending is to get the "prince" and never have to gain any sense of self-worth.

I can't possibly tell you how grateful I am that my fifteen year old daughter never took a liking for the series either.
