Agreed. I LOVE Avengers after I saw it. Made me go back and watch the other related movies and fan over it. But the comics fandom, while I want to read some, is so huge and massive that it feels overwhelming.

I can't say I'm a fan of The Avengers comics, but I can definitely say I'm a fan of The Avengers movie.

(that being said I'm going to look out for some Black Widow comics....)

If you're interested, you can look up some lists of the the best Avengers stories and pick out a couple that look interesting to you.

My unsolicited two cents: My go-to rec is Avengers Forever -- it does deal with a whole fuckload of continuity, but it actually explains it all, so that new readers can totally know what's going on and get a partial history of the Marvel universe while they're at it, and imho it actually makes you want to read all the awesome shit the characters talk about. Plus the trade has notes in the back telling the readers what books and issues the stuff being referenced comes from.

Thanks for the recommendation!! I'll check out Avengers Forever. The whole comics fandom/world seems kind of overwhelming, but I'd like to give it a shot!

Question concerning Marvel stuff like Avengers, is it fairly contained?

Because that's what put me off DC. I decided to read through Impulse, and I'd be reading along, and then "To be Continued in Flash #whatever!" and then next issue was "Continuing from Flash #Whatever" starting mid-fight against someone I've never heard of, and then they get to the bad guy and... "Continued in Legion of Superheroes #blarg!" Oh look, next Impulse the bad guy has been defeated and will never be explained. And I don't WANT to track down back issues of a dozen different series in order to be able to read one storyline! I mean, I wouldn't start reading GRRM "And then Arya picked up her sword..." Please see Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time Book 3 page 67. "

Contained? Unfortunately no :P. I'd say in Marvel the characters in different teams/books interact even more than they do in DC, since they're mostly all in one city.

However, good series that aren't tie-ins to event comics (when the company knows they've got the readers suckered in and can dick around with them and make them buy loads of shit until the event ends) shouldn't do that -- makes readers frustrated and more likely to drop the title.

More often, a character will say "sorry about [xyz complication] I was busy with [bizarre incident that makes no sense]", and there'll be a little asterisk to a footnote saying "read Series Title #whatever to learn more!" but it won't mean you can't understand the story at all without reading the other story. It varies a lot, I guess, depending on what new idea the editors have got into their heads.

This is why I don't follow current comics. I just buy trades of old series that have been already completed.

Thankyou so much for this recommendation. I am interested in the comics now but am confused. I assume you mean http://theavengers.tv/forever/guide.htm yeah?

I've been enjoying the Avengers vs X-Men comic series they started in April, if only for Tony Stark vs Magneto.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-05-19 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
...as an X-Men cartoon/movie fan I might need to look into that!!

oh my god, don't. the entire thing is OOC. I have no idea how on earth trekkiesara can legitimately rec it.
