American crime television shows as a whole.

As a whole?

You can't say blanket statements like that given that American crime television can go from dramedies like Psyche to thrillers like Person of Interest. The range is too wide to lump them altogether.

[identity profile] 09019.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
(Different Anon)

I think the idea for me isn't that all american crime television is bad, but more that there's a LOT of it. So much that, while a show may be good, the need to set it in an office/crime setting becomes kind of a weight in a lot of shows.

And the fact that there is so much of it, means the market is flooded. Sure there are a lot of gems, but there's a lot of bland stuff, too. And that is coming from a personal opinion, but there's only so many crime procedurals I can get through until it becomes tiring. And I love me a good crime procedural.

To me, there are simply too many, which at once raises the bar very high to create a new, innovative and interesting _version_ of a crime procedural. But at the same time, because of the success of many shows, it becomes easy to get a "pass" on many, many, many shows. I honestly feel like there are some shows on TV these days that had to "add in" a cop show element just to get the green light (I'm thinking of Grimm, Dexter *I'm not a h/c fan of either, just seen a few eps).

lol that was supposed to be anon but uh

its cool still stand by my opinion

and, let's not forget, The Wire

How can you agree with a blanket statement like that when American crime shows are so diverse? I can see if you don't like Psych or Castle and think they are silly. But what about more realistic crime shows like The Wire, Sons of Anarchy or Justified? Elementary can be at any point on that spectrum.

[identity profile] htebazytook.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Like this:

I agree!

:P

I'm just saying there's a lot of shitty TV, and the odds are kind of against any new show for even surviving let alone being decent, in general. Not actually trying to play semantics on this issue of the utmost SRS BZNS

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Do you honestly believe that Elementary is going to be anything like The Wire? I'm pretty sure it will be another boring CSI rip-off.

Furthermore, I wouldn't call The Wire or Sons of Anarchy "crime shows".

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
CBS also gave us Person of Interest. Watch that and tell me that Elementary doesn't have the same potential because it is on that network.

[identity profile] deadtree.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Person of Interest is the reason I'm willing to give Elementary a chance, in the end. The pros and cons to Elementary (ei, pro: Lucy Liu is in it; con: Lucy Liu is Watson when she'd be a better Sherlock; etc) add up to basically 0, but CBS came out with a fabulous show in PoI (and ALSO managed to have a strong female character who-- so far-- has shown no signs of being romantically interested in either male lead), so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
But what about more realistic crime shows like The Wire, Sons of Anarchy or Justified

Those are all on cable channels for a reason. As I said above I'm still tentatively hopeful because CBS does seem to be trying -- though I think the most we can hope for is another House, not The Wire! -- but there is a HUGE difference between a channel like FX (whose brand is grittier and more realistic dramas like SoA and Justified) and CBS. And The Wire can't even be brought into the discussion, really. It barely scraped by on HBO.

American crime shows are diverse. American crime shows on major networks made these days, not so much.*

*(Before someone jumps on me: YES network TV can be good. It can be great! Some of my favorite shows are network. But none of them are CBS, and network TV is still more miss than hit, IMO. Cable can be, too, of course, but normally the misses are least are trying for something interesting, at least on the good cable channels).

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Watch CBS' Person of Interest. Not only because, yes, it can be down right brutal, also because, dammit, I want a bigger fandom. (I swear, the show is like Nolan's Batman but without the costumes. It's awesome.)

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I tried it actually -- forgot I even did that! -- but wasn't a fan. I do hear it gets better but IDK, it didn't grab me. I might give it a shot if people are still liking it in a season or two :/

But yes, the fact that PoI which is supposed to be tnteresting and The Good Wife which is supposed to be amazing are on CBS gives me a little hope for Elementary.

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Just keep watching it. It does pick up and become nice and complex. (Carter seems to be the only white hat in the series. Everyone else wallows deeply in gray.) Reese and Finch are the two biggest badasses on network and cable right now.

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'll add it back to my list then!

*eyes list* *sighs*

I should probably go watch some TV now.
