What are some legitimate reasons to be skeptical that don't involve anything to do with Moffat's Sherlock?

American crime television shows as a whole.

[identity profile] mekkio.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
As a whole?

You can't say blanket statements like that given that American crime television can go from dramedies like Psyche to thrillers like Person of Interest. The range is too wide to lump them altogether.

There's the fact Watson is no longer former military and also the fact she's a disgraced surgeon who's had her license revoked. I like Lucy Lui as an actress and will be giving Elementary a shot, but these choices do make me worry about her characterization a bit.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-22 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Psh, everyone knows ladies can't be doctors or veterans. That would just be silly!

That bothered me. I'm also a bit worried that they're going to turn it into a romance too. I suppose it could be well done, but I doubt it.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that it's skeevy that Watson is no longer military, but the 'disgraced' part really doesn't bother me because it seems really obvious to me that that's going to be a major plot point. Unless they've decided to make her either a terrible person or incompetent (which, okay, they might have, but that would be so baffling and contrary to canon that I don't really consider it a possibility), I will eat my hat if helping Watson regain her reputation/prove her innocence isn't a story arc during the series.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Possible sexism? Making Watson female is absolutely fine (love it personally), but then they also made her a failed/shamed surgeon instead of a respected, retired army doctor. Plus she got really squeamish about crime scenes in the trailer or something, idk. It's choices like that that've raised a few eyebrows.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I noticed that, too! WTF? Do tv writers understand some of the stuff doctors deal with? God...

(Anonymous) 2012-05-22 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Watson had some moments of shock in the canon in response to violence. We have next to no context for her reaction and her history as a failed/shamed surgeon is going to be an interesting plot point, imo.

[identity profile] cyniconvention.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, although some have argued that Watson isn't used to seeing a brutally murdered body.

What bothered me most about the teaser thing I saw was the fact that they seemed to make Watson a woman for the pure and simple fact that she's supposed to be coming from an emotional place in order to help Holmes overcome his addiction. The apparent squeamishness cemented that for me, and I'm not happy about it.

The "legitimate" reasons you'll get as responses are hardly legitimate as there are worse offenses in those adaptations that are considered classics. The Sherlock fandom's tunnel vision is pathetic and I hope this show lasts for a long time. The more Sherlock Holmes the better ~

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
For me personally, CBS has VERY few shows that I enjoy. I tend to find them too formulaic and blandly written -- it's very much the "appeal to the masses" channel, even more so than the other main US networks. That said, The Good Wife is supposed to be very good and they seem to be trying to develop a few higher quality dramas -- Vegas looks like the most promising "Mad Men for Network TV" show yet -- so I have some hope.

Skepticism is a perfectly legitimate reaction to any adaptation of source material in which one is invested. I was skeptical of both the Guy Ritchie movies and the BBC series before they came out as well. Now, semi-coherent rage, that's something else...

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 11:57 am (UTC)(link)
+1

(Of course, skepticism is also generally a legitimate reaction to any new canon, period. Unless its coming from a creative mind I already know and trust or as gotten good review from people I trust, I tend to approach even the best sounding new show/movie/both with tentative optimism at best. Anything more than that is setting yourself up for disappointment, IMO).

I won't be into it because I know that those two will eventually hook up and it will all be downhill from there. Looking at you Bones and House.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Mainly the Watson character (It's fine Watson's a woman, but I'm worried about how they're going to handle her character based on the information we've been given). Also, as has been mentioned, most CBS procedural shows are bland and boring. Then there's the fact that it may end up being a good show, but not necessarily a good adaptation of Sherlock Holmes. I don't want Elementary to fail and will watch several episodes before completely writing it off. However, these are all little things which bother me about it, and if I turn out to be right, I don't see the point in watching or stanning out of spite.

If I'm wrong then I will happily eat my words.

[identity profile] cashay.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
1) Forced relationship/flirting between Joan and Sherlock that turns the focus of the show from crimes to the "growing romance" between them. I don't mind romance in a crime show but I don't like it if suddenly everything becomes about the UST between them, if I wanted this I'd watch romantic shows.

2) Screwing the character of Watson by making Joan weak and throwing stereotypes our way. I don't mind her being an emotional character but in TV emotional characters often mean breaking down crying every five minutes etc.

3) Horrible british accent :P

I'm sure there are more reasons to be sceptical those are just the things I came up with by watching the preview. I'm definitely going to give the show a chance but I'm gonna stay sceptical because there is always a possibility for screw-up no matter who is making the show.
