I don't think the new version making Watson female is automatically better. In fact, as much as I appreciate the added diversity (not just a woman, but an Asian woman), I can't help but feel it is, to some degree, a way to create the potential for a Holmes/Watson relationship without having to deal with teh ghey (I'm not saying they're planning to make them a couple, but that they want to keep their options open if the show lasts long enough). And the fact that they've taken away Watson's status as a veteran and a practicing doctor REALLY pisses me off.
I'm going to give the show a chance, with fingers crossed that it's good, but I don't get where people are getting the "OMG, it's gonna be better than Sherlock!" from.

It's exciting to see what Elementary will be like, but I'm not going to say which show is better until I see it. I completely get what you mean. Sometimes overeager, defensive fans can really ruin something.

I AM STANNING FOR THE SHOW ALREADY.
I like Lucy Liu and JLM and the BBC Sherlock stans are being idiots about this show, so I am committed to supporting it (lol until it premieres- if it turns out to suck, I maintain the right to withdraw my support).

I saw the trailer and wasn't really that impressed. It looked like most other US procedurals, except a bit smarter maybe. But it was just the promo, so it might still turn out different. And even if it is just another (smart) procedural, that doesn't make it a bad show. I quite like some of those.
Anyway, I'm going to withhold judgment until I've seen more. And then I'll see if it's a good Sherlock Holmes show and/or a good show in general.

(It doesn't help that the one new show of theirs that seemed interesting to me this year was 2 Broke Girls. I'm still angry they tricked me into watching that with Kat Denning's awesome.)
But I do love Lucy Liu and am holding out hope that Vegas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIJSII0LwSY) is good, so I guess this is the year I give CBS a real shot again.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 12:16 am (UTC)(link)Anyway. As others have already said, I'm also a bit unhappy about the fact that she's not an army doctor. In a way, that almost makes me wish she could have Batwoman's backstory, except as a doctor. (If only Sherlock were female too.)

And I cannot with people who are upset over Joan gasping at the sight of the dead body. Good lord. It's not like she full on fainted and needed smelling salts. Yes she's a surgeon and has seen bodies before. But seeing a body on a operating table is different than opening a door to find a corpse in a pool of blood. It's a bit shocking and her gasping doesn't make her ~weak.
As far as the military service stuff and being a surgeon who has lost her license... well we don't know the full story yet. Women in the military don't have the same experience as men. They are still not allowed in combat (this policy is slowly changing but idk if it has yet). So just by changing the gender of the character, they're already changing her potential military experience. Plus, I don't really believe that Watson's military experience is ESSENTIAL to the character. And as far as being a surgeon who has lost her license... we don't know the circumstances yet. It doesn't mean that she's incompetent or a bad doctor. She might have just had a bad case. The important part is that being a surgeon who lost her license is putting her in a position where she is a bit lost in life which is why she would take up with Sherlock and get swept up in his crime solving.
And finally the options in this scenario were not Joan/Sherlock heterosexual and interracial relationship (IF the show is even going to go there) relationship vs John/Sherlock homosexual relationship. So by making John into Joan we are not being ~robbed~ of a gay relationship on TV. THAT WAS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. IT WAS NEVER AN OPTION. So making John into Joan is NOT an example of homophobia. It just isn't. John and Sherlock is not a canon sexual relationship so there is no gay relationship being erased.

However, I like the stans more than the haters. Even if both are talking out of their hats, it's much less annoying to watch someone be happy about something they are looking forward to than to listen to someone badmouth things they don't know anything about and don't have to be involved with.

I'm skeptical about the show for many reasons, mostly having to do with what I know about the changes to Watson's character and the really incompetent cops, but I'll likely give it a shot. It looks pretty formulaic, but I generally don't mind that (except in sitcoms because I generally hate those for one reason or another). I do like Liu's acting, and what little I know of JLM makes me like him, so we'll see.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 03:32 am (UTC)(link)But honestly I'm sick of every iteration of Holmes that's come up since the RDJ movie. And I'm not saying that as ZOMGUH ROBERT FANGURLL, I'm saying that as seriously guys fucking quit it I'm sick of this shit. I love Moffat, but I can't stand the new BBC sherlock, and I can't stand Benedict Cumberbatch, and I've preemptively facedesked multiple times over what I know the Elementary fandom will be.

But as an Author Conan Doyle fan?
Do the haters understand just how many times the sherlock holmes series have gone through the ringer? They've been adapted so many times. One more shitty or brilliant show is just another drop in the ocean, either way. No matter how they spin these stories, nothing "sacred" will be lost.
The comparative analysis is interesting because they are clearly similar shows (the old pixar vs. dream works argument) . But getting defensive and the like... well, for example, dream works and pixar release similar-topic-ed movies as a fucking business strategy. Because of the doubled hype, everyone makes more money in the end.
It's totally fine to be critical or excited, I think both sides have valid points! But we know so little about this thing that anyone giving 100% or more on a single viewpoint is .... very foolish. Come on, didn't you guys learn anything from the stories?
Furthermore, a truly good series adaptation will, I think.... withstand the test of time.
