2. As a side character in a semi-crossover fic.
I've always been kind of jealous that everyone else in the fandom world seems to have a favorite version of SH, and while I've been tempted to get into some of them, I wouldn't know which to pick, where to start, and I'd be basically spoiled from the get-go because of all the fandom exposure.
So I'm really looking forward to starting on the ground floor with a version that can be 'mine'. (Always assuming it doesn't suck.) Besides, with House over, there's going to be a snarky puzzle-solving bastard void in my TV life.

Sherlock is also very good, and it's only 6 90-minute long epsiodes, so you can catch up quick before S3 starts.
