My exposure to Holmes thus far has been:

1. Reading my copy of 'Hound' so many times it's falling apart, and

2. As a side character in a semi-crossover fic.

I've always been kind of jealous that everyone else in the fandom world seems to have a favorite version of SH, and while I've been tempted to get into some of them, I wouldn't know which to pick, where to start, and I'd be basically spoiled from the get-go because of all the fandom exposure.

So I'm really looking forward to starting on the ground floor with a version that can be 'mine'. (Always assuming it doesn't suck.) Besides, with House over, there's going to be a snarky puzzle-solving bastard void in my TV life.

You should watch the Jeremy Brett version, it's amazing.

Sherlock is also very good, and it's only 6 90-minute long epsiodes, so you can catch up quick before S3 starts.

The Jeremy Brett version is the best IMHO. Most accurate to novels, most thorough adaptation, best Sherlock (YEP I SAID IT COME AT ME BEYOTCHES)- it's a little weak on the action scenes but whatever, it was made in the 80's and Brett had health problems. I read the series before watching any adaptations and the Granada/Brett Sherlock just seems to be the closest to the originals vOv

I think that I consider Brett's Holmes and Cumberbatch's Sherlock are different enough (not just becasue of the time they live in, though that's part of it), so I feel fine liking them both without really trying to compare them. Maybe that's just me trying to have my cake and eat it too, but... oh, well.
