There's the fact Watson is no longer former military and also the fact she's a disgraced surgeon who's had her license revoked. I like Lucy Lui as an actress and will be giving Elementary a shot, but these choices do make me worry about her characterization a bit.

Psh, everyone knows ladies can't be doctors or veterans. That would just be silly!

Teddy Altman would like to have a chat with you. ;-)

(Character from Grey's Anatomy, who is a female surgeon and an army vet.)

I believe that was supposed to be sarcastic...

Oh I know, I took it as such. Hence the winky face. :-) Anon does have a point... I wish they hadn't changed that about Joan Watson. I mean, why couldn't she be an army vet and a surgeon?

i don't really see this as a problem. but maybe i don't look for the sexism in everything.

Part of the problem some people have with it is that being a military doctor was a huge part of the character, and they've stripped that away from this Watson.

Also, I think some people are looking at it as saying that women can't be those things. It's a legitimate concern and there has been zero explanation from the creators for why they changed those plot points for Watson as a character. I think if they would explain their motives it might clear things up, but as it is now it's very sketchy looking.

This. Even fat, bumbling MOUSE Watson was in the army, it's integral to Watson's backstory and explain why he's so badass and why Sherlock is more than happy to let HIM carry the gun.

+1

Congrats, you speshul snowflake, you.

But seriously, how can you remake Sherlock Holmes in this day and age and not mention Watson fighting in Afghanistan? History's repeating itself.

That bothered me. I'm also a bit worried that they're going to turn it into a romance too. I suppose it could be well done, but I doubt it.

I really hope they don't make it a romance. It won't stop the shippers (which is fine; ship and let ship) but purely platonic male-female friendships on TV are sorely lacking.

I agree that it's skeevy that Watson is no longer military, but the 'disgraced' part really doesn't bother me because it seems really obvious to me that that's going to be a major plot point. Unless they've decided to make her either a terrible person or incompetent (which, okay, they might have, but that would be so baffling and contrary to canon that I don't really consider it a possibility), I will eat my hat if helping Watson regain her reputation/prove her innocence isn't a story arc during the series.
