lmao that's not even what sjers support

bc... you know... racism

[identity profile] insanenoodlyguy.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Ahem: "You sound white."

That is all.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
lol u

thinking racism against white people is a thing

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
No, but it is fucked up to see that shit slapped around everywhere.

I honest to god saw a thread yesterday that went like this:

"[story about homophobia]" -> "Lol yes stupid white people!"

News flash: white people are not the only homophobes in the world. Not being white does not instantly get you a 'get out of all bigoted actions free' card. (The article was about black gay men, too.)

Huh, I thought racism was just hatred of a race that’s not your own? Am I missing something?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
That is correct. However, SJWs are of the opinion that, since white people are automatically priviledged, racism against white people is not possible.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That is one definition. Another is that racism is prejudice (of any sort; not just hateful prejudice) against another race combined with social privilege based on your own race. The first is (as far as I can tell) the most common colloquial definition. The second is the most widely-accepted academic definition (at least in the US). Neither is more "right" than the other, because semantics doesn't fucking work like that.

This causes all kinds of problems, because someone operating under definition 1 might say something about someone expressing hatred of white people being racist, and a person operating under definition 2 might be really upset by that because they thought the other person was claiming white people don't have racially-based social privilege. Or, someone operating under definition 2 might say a generalization about a particular race is racist, and someone operating under definition 1 might think that's really stupid if the generalization isn't overtly hateful.

tl;dr - SJW's and people who rail about SJW's all need to study basic linguistics, ffs.

Best comment explaining this ever.

Thanks for this, srsly. I have a lot of difficulty sometimes articulating that there are different definitions of racism. I tend to operate under the "academic" definition no.2 and I need to be more aware that generally that's not what comes to mind for people when they hear the word.

No problem. I'm always down for getting ranty and over-explainy about semantics, and I'm happy someone found my ranting useful.

Okay, so your comment is so vague idk what you're even saying. But:

1) Admittedly, I rushed through reading the secret. I got the "I'm now prejudiced" part but missed the "judging whole cultures" part, so I was kind of off-point. Le whoops. My bad.

But 2) I still think that one of the best ways to work through a prejudice is to talk to people. Not because it makes you magically approve of something creepy (like, say, FGM -- which I wonder too if this is about, actually), but because it humanizes the people who believe the creepy shit. It's much better, for your own health and the others you interact with, to be able to go "Gaaah, I hate that opinion of yours, but you're not so bad" than to be like "I can't deal with you because you hold that opinion."

But it takes a LOT of work to get to that point.

This. I have friends with different opinions on politics and life, but that doesn't automatically mean that they're bad people. Living in a multicultural country and growing up with them since childhood does help. It's not easy, it's not pretty, but it does open your mind.
