That is all.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 03:14 am (UTC)(link)thinking racism against white people is a thing

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 07:43 am (UTC)(link)I honest to god saw a thread yesterday that went like this:
"[story about homophobia]" -> "Lol yes stupid white people!"
News flash: white people are not the only homophobes in the world. Not being white does not instantly get you a 'get out of all bigoted actions free' card. (The article was about black gay men, too.)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)This causes all kinds of problems, because someone operating under definition 1 might say something about someone expressing hatred of white people being racist, and a person operating under definition 2 might be really upset by that because they thought the other person was claiming white people don't have racially-based social privilege. Or, someone operating under definition 2 might say a generalization about a particular race is racist, and someone operating under definition 1 might think that's really stupid if the generalization isn't overtly hateful.
tl;dr - SJW's and people who rail about SJW's all need to study basic linguistics, ffs.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)Thanks for this, srsly. I have a lot of difficulty sometimes articulating that there are different definitions of racism. I tend to operate under the "academic" definition no.2 and I need to be more aware that generally that's not what comes to mind for people when they hear the word.

1) Admittedly, I rushed through reading the secret. I got the "I'm now prejudiced" part but missed the "judging whole cultures" part, so I was kind of off-point. Le whoops. My bad.
But 2) I still think that one of the best ways to work through a prejudice is to talk to people. Not because it makes you magically approve of something creepy (like, say, FGM -- which I wonder too if this is about, actually), but because it humanizes the people who believe the creepy shit. It's much better, for your own health and the others you interact with, to be able to go "Gaaah, I hate that opinion of yours, but you're not so bad" than to be like "I can't deal with you because you hold that opinion."
But it takes a LOT of work to get to that point.
