Now that you've talked to all the socially liberal people, go back to the places and people that (now) make you uncomfortable and talk to them.
No, I'm not saying "be kind to a homophobe" or the like. What I am saying is... well, that kind of thinking leads you to feel people like you are superior. Go find some people outside your circles. People you're not sure about. Talk to them and ask them about their lives.
I'm betting that if you're brave enough to do this, you'll like them, too. Not "approve of everything they believe"... but find things to like about them, even as you scrunch your nose at their random occasional iffy comments.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 03:14 am (UTC)(link)thinking racism against white people is a thing

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 07:43 am (UTC)(link)I honest to god saw a thread yesterday that went like this:
"[story about homophobia]" -> "Lol yes stupid white people!"
News flash: white people are not the only homophobes in the world. Not being white does not instantly get you a 'get out of all bigoted actions free' card. (The article was about black gay men, too.)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)This causes all kinds of problems, because someone operating under definition 1 might say something about someone expressing hatred of white people being racist, and a person operating under definition 2 might be really upset by that because they thought the other person was claiming white people don't have racially-based social privilege. Or, someone operating under definition 2 might say a generalization about a particular race is racist, and someone operating under definition 1 might think that's really stupid if the generalization isn't overtly hateful.
tl;dr - SJW's and people who rail about SJW's all need to study basic linguistics, ffs.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)Thanks for this, srsly. I have a lot of difficulty sometimes articulating that there are different definitions of racism. I tend to operate under the "academic" definition no.2 and I need to be more aware that generally that's not what comes to mind for people when they hear the word.

1) Admittedly, I rushed through reading the secret. I got the "I'm now prejudiced" part but missed the "judging whole cultures" part, so I was kind of off-point. Le whoops. My bad.
But 2) I still think that one of the best ways to work through a prejudice is to talk to people. Not because it makes you magically approve of something creepy (like, say, FGM -- which I wonder too if this is about, actually), but because it humanizes the people who believe the creepy shit. It's much better, for your own health and the others you interact with, to be able to go "Gaaah, I hate that opinion of yours, but you're not so bad" than to be like "I can't deal with you because you hold that opinion."
But it takes a LOT of work to get to that point.

Where I live, I wouldn't say that poverty is definitely the biggest reason people are discriminated against, but it's most certainly in the running. And here, people of color and single women are far, far likelier to live in poverty than white dudes, so there's a lot of intersectionality going on.
Class is the one people avoid talking about the most, though. Like, we have discussions about race and gender and sexuality and religion, and yeah, some people get all huffy that we're talking about this stuff, but man, you bring up classism and poverty, and suddenly you've got 90% of the middle and upper classes screaming "you're just jealous, should work harder, BOOTSRAPS!" It's almost like they're only willing to take poverty seriously as a problem if poor people "admit" that it really is their fault they're poor. Not to mention the bullshit with certain wealthy areas deciding they can no longer be a part of majority lower-middle/lower class city they live in and succeeding to form their own city so their taxes don't go toward poor kids' public education. (Fuck Piedmont, yo.)

It also strikes as surprising because I live in a mostly white country. Over 85% of the population here is white, so class and not race is the most important factor when it comes to oppression. Of course intersectionality is at play, but that doesn't change the fact that most of the issues these people face are because of their economical situation.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-23 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)It's much easier to feel better about "conquering" various contemporary issues than it is to actually change our behaviour towards economics.
This pisses me off so much sometimes.
