TBF for every socially liberal part of Canada, there is a sizeable population of narrow-minded conservatives. Case in point: the recent elections for the Alberta government came down to a choice between two right-wing parties (one much loonier than the other). >.

No, I know. It's not like, some liberal utopia, certainly. But there is a mindset amongst a lot of people that it is.

Yep. I guess there are worse reputations to have. OTOH, it's almost like false advertising. Sadly, not all Canadians are non-judgmental.

er, do we count Alberta for any of that? /joke.

To be fair, though, even our conservatives are usually more liberal about things than their foreign counterparts ('specially the ones to the south), but liberal /=better anyway. Just means we have different kinds of political jackasses. The liberally minded folk can be just as bigoted/jackassed as their conservative counterparts. They just dress it up in different clothing.

This.

Lol. I'm from Alberta, and quite a few people in my generation are socially liberal and supportive of equal rights for minorities and LGBTQ people. It would be interesting to see what the political landscape would be like if all of these people bothered to vote. Obviously the voting public *cough*rural Alberta*cough* speaks for itself.... social conservatism ahoy! >.<

While there is certainly no shortage of jackasses in politics, I'm confused as to what you're saying? (I do agree with you that liberal does not automatically mean better.)

Another Albertan here and yeah, ain't that the truth? Though it depends where in Alberta you are (God, Calgary... no. Just... no. >.<) but sadly, the younger, less conservative population doesn't seem to want to vote. We can't change things if we don't use our voice. *sighs*

The tendency across the province toward party loyalty til you die is part of the problem too, obviously. They didn't call Klein "King Ralph" for nothing.

I'm usually okay with the pc party here for fiscal reasons, but holy hell this was first time I actually voted for them because wildrose scares the crap out of me D:

Yeah, they scare me too. I'm very happy they didn't win my riding. I mean, it would be nice to have a new party in power (40+ years is a little ridiculous), but if Wildrose is the alternative? No thank you. That said, I am glad Alison Redford will have a chance to prove herself.

Also, it's awesome to see another Albertan on here. ^.^

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
REDFORD. I think I've pre-emptively crushed on her or something. As much as I'd like to see a different party holding the majority, I'm completely up for settling for new faces and directions if it means pc will stop stagnating and actually use progressive part of their name more often.

Yes, ITA. I have hopes for Redford! :-)

[identity profile] dazzledfirestar.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
The Wildrose party scared the bejezus out of me... my God. I spent half the lead up to the election just slack jawed and shaking my head. Thank goodness we avoided that mess.

Also, hey! Albertans! :D

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in Edmonton, so we thankfully have none of their candidates representing any of our ridings. It's probably the only time I will appreciate vote splitting for ensuring that though.

[identity profile] dazzledfirestar.livejournal.com 2012-05-23 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I miss Edmonton. lol I was concerned about the conservative parties when I was growing up in Edmonton but Calgary... my GOD. It's just plain scary down here! Can I come home now?
