So I'm just wondering how this works. It seems there are other people here who have done this sort of thing and can sate my curiosity. How does it work when you're roleplaying someone who looks nothing like you and is even a different sex? Especially when it's yaoi roleplaying or whatever. Do you pretend you're not looking at what you're looking at and that their vagina is an ass or just... I want to know.

I realize that this probably sounds like I just walked out of a time machine from the 19th century or am a robot with no imagination but I am mad curious.

I've done both online and IRL roleplaying and usually the focus is the scenario, not necessarily the bits involved. People get attached to certain characters or character types because they enjoy the story around them - ex: a virgin being seduced by a dangerous older partner (vampire/human), a powerful businessperson brought to their knees by a secretly dominant lover, etc. When you play a character, you are focusing on their role, not their exact appearance. It lets you step outside the personality/situation you live in and explore what it might be like to wake up in someone else's shoes.
