Go fuck yourself.

Seriously, the casual homophobia in this comment is disgusting. Why would slash get a special mention as "bullshit" when there are tons and tons of a rabid het shippers?

Also, saying you ship something is just a different way of saying you like it.

Finally, people do not "keep company" with every single other person who ships their ship. They "keep company" with the people they actually interact with. A person is not automatically associated with someone just because they drew a picture of the same people being romantic. It goes in the opposite direction too, just because you ship something where the fans are all nice and polite it doesn't automatically make you nice and polite as well.

Guilt and unguilt by association = small wonder at the homophobia.

Still hoping it's a particularly inept yet dedicated troll, but sadly I know way too many who actually think like this to write it off entirely.

Seriously, I hate when people conflate 'slash' with 'non-canon pairing'. Because a) some slash ships are canon and b) there's a shitload of non-canon het pairings. :/ If you use 'slash' as shorthand for 'not canon' you really need to learn to verbalise better.

Also in my experience most of the really infamously rabid ships are het. Slash shippers can be plenty obnoxious but they're much more likely to side-eye people who start tinhatting. Probably YMMV but offhand the only infamous ship I can think of what is slash is a canon couple.

Not to lessen the fact the OP is a complete douche, but you've obviously never heard of SPN fandom. Where tinhatting is mandatory for both characters and actors, and misogyny is so bad that it affects even the canon's writing and the actresses are too fucking terrified to be convention guests.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-05-26 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Okay yeah I did not think of SPN... that would be an instance of 'ships so infamously batshit that even people who are not in the fandom and have never watched the show are aware of it' which does not involve het. Ugh.

I do still think that hetships are often more disposed to tinhatting because in general heterosexual subtext is more likely to be intentional and heterosexual pairings are more likely to become canon, so there tends to be an underlying assumption that a perceived heterosexual subtext must be followed up on eventually. /3am ramblings

Oh I definitely agree that het ships do tend to be far more psycho about it far more often. But well...slash have the potential to be just as infamously crazy. In fact, the rampant misogyny inherent in the slash sections of my fandoms was what made it so hard for me to admit I even shipped it for a really long time (more because I was lambasted by fellow slash shippers for not wanting the poor female love interest to Die For Our Ship).

(Anonymous) 2012-05-26 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
OK, I wanted to say something as "well, in my experience slash shippers are more rabid than het shippers", but I guess that's what OP would want. DON'T YOU SEE HE/SHE WANTS TO BREAK US APART?

Let's just say there are rabid shippers on both sides of the fence, mkay?

Well said <3

Thankyou.

Yeah, this. Not going to touch the homophobia because it's too fucking early for me to deal with that crap, but oh man your last point. There are people who ship what I ship that I would rather stay far, faaaaaar away from. Then, on the opposite end, people can have friends in fandom without having any of the same ships at all. The person I talk about/rp Supernatural with the most doesn't do shipping, while I ship freaking everything.

At the absolute worst, our conversations veer into friendly debate territory, and said debates never involve shipping because, well, I have other fandom friends to squee over my pairings with and she doesn't have any to squee over in the first place. We're too busy coming up with weird shit like "Pfffft it would be hilarious if Dean turned out to be God all along, he'd be the most pissed off at the revelation" and "So what effect would drinking angel blood have? ...Let's have Cas get captured by witches and see what happens" to argue about shipping preferences.
