Whoops, I meant to say that the best option is not to ship anything at all. But still, sorry for having opinions on the internet :D You can enjoy your slash and all that bullshit, just don't try to claim it's canon, and remember that you are judged by your company. (Shipping a pairing=/=liking a pairing)

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2012-05-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I feel the wisest thing to do would be to only support canon couples, but we can;t have nice things

You're gonna strain something trying to backpedal that hard out of that deep a hole, you know. And how exactly are shipping a pairing and liking a pairing not the same thing?

P.S. -- you still sound like a gigantic douchewaffle, so please, judge away and pretend other people care if that's the only thing that gives your life meaning anymore.

But still, sorry for having opinions on the internet :D

So it's okay for you to judge people who have opinions different from yours, but it's not okay for us to judge you in response?

'Kay.

Go fuck yourself.

Seriously, the casual homophobia in this comment is disgusting. Why would slash get a special mention as "bullshit" when there are tons and tons of a rabid het shippers?

Also, saying you ship something is just a different way of saying you like it.

Finally, people do not "keep company" with every single other person who ships their ship. They "keep company" with the people they actually interact with. A person is not automatically associated with someone just because they drew a picture of the same people being romantic. It goes in the opposite direction too, just because you ship something where the fans are all nice and polite it doesn't automatically make you nice and polite as well.

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2012-05-26 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Guilt and unguilt by association = small wonder at the homophobia.

Still hoping it's a particularly inept yet dedicated troll, but sadly I know way too many who actually think like this to write it off entirely.

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-05-26 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I hate when people conflate 'slash' with 'non-canon pairing'. Because a) some slash ships are canon and b) there's a shitload of non-canon het pairings. :/ If you use 'slash' as shorthand for 'not canon' you really need to learn to verbalise better.

Also in my experience most of the really infamously rabid ships are het. Slash shippers can be plenty obnoxious but they're much more likely to side-eye people who start tinhatting. Probably YMMV but offhand the only infamous ship I can think of what is slash is a canon couple.

Well said <3

[identity profile] goatsfoot.livejournal.com 2012-05-26 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Thankyou.

[identity profile] threeonetwo.livejournal.com 2012-05-26 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. Not going to touch the homophobia because it's too fucking early for me to deal with that crap, but oh man your last point. There are people who ship what I ship that I would rather stay far, faaaaaar away from. Then, on the opposite end, people can have friends in fandom without having any of the same ships at all. The person I talk about/rp Supernatural with the most doesn't do shipping, while I ship freaking everything.

At the absolute worst, our conversations veer into friendly debate territory, and said debates never involve shipping because, well, I have other fandom friends to squee over my pairings with and she doesn't have any to squee over in the first place. We're too busy coming up with weird shit like "Pfffft it would be hilarious if Dean turned out to be God all along, he'd be the most pissed off at the revelation" and "So what effect would drinking angel blood have? ...Let's have Cas get captured by witches and see what happens" to argue about shipping preferences.

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-05-26 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Wait. Are you somehow under the impression that shipping means you think it's canon? Awwww. That's kind of precious tbh.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-26 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ha. I guess that would explain the part about Shipping a pairing=/=liking a pairing. I was seriously not being able to figure that line out.
pantswarrior: Laguna scratches his head. (huh?)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2012-05-26 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
You seem to be under the impression that everyone who ships the same pairing interacts with each other.

There's one pairing I'm fairly fond of, and I don't interact with the fandom at all anymore except by posting fic, because it's huge and overwhelming and the people who ship that pairing tend to be obnoxious. But I still like the pairing itself. Are those obnoxious shippers considered my company even if I haven't paid attention to them in years?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-26 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
You're just making it worse for yourself by adding the homophobia and assuming fans of certain ships actually believe they're canon. It's fanon or fanfic or headcanon or WHATEVER for a rea

You know what why do I bother.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-05-26 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
But still, sorry for having opinions on the internet

Oh, Lord... People have been whining like this since I started on the 'Net in the mid 90's. "I can express my opinion, but as soon as people express one that disagrees with mine, OMG YOU'RE ALL OPPRESSING ME!!"

You can enjoy your slash [...] just don't try to claim it's canon

Ok, aside from the fact that there ARE canon gay and lesbian couples, the fact that you single out slash (cuz no one EVER ships non-canon STRAIGHT couples, amirite?) suggests that you just might be a homophobic douche.

Actually, canon shippers are fucking insane most of the time, and prove to be far more unreasonable and worse company than anyone else on the internet. So, OP, I judge you for the insinuation that canon shippers are better on the sheer fact that they are as batshit insane as the rest of us.

"Shipping a pairing=/=liking a pairing"
What are you even talking about.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-26 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I hate to start the Star Trek wank up again, buuuuuut, I wonder if this troll wasn't influenced by the indication in some of last week's wank that some K/S shippers (like me!) kind of, sort of, a little bit consider K/S to be canon-ish. As in, the relationship has a bit more substance than just subtext and fandom. That's what I'm getting (besides douchbaggery and homophobia)from the "enjoy your slash and all that bullshit, just don't try to claim it's canon."

"The best option is not to ship anything at all"? I feel like I'm being chided for pleasuring myself because it's a sin or something, which . . . yep pretty solid metaphor I think!

"(Shipping a pairing=/=liking a pairing)"

. . . . sorry, does this make logical sense??

(Anonymous) 2012-05-26 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
what point are you trying to make with shipping a pairing=/=liking a pairing?

explain please.

[identity profile] raichu100.livejournal.com 2012-05-26 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Having opinions =/= judging everyone else for their opinions.

And you do realize, right, that only a small and relatively off-the-wall percentage of non-canon shippers actually claim that their ship is canon?

[identity profile] cashay.livejournal.com 2012-05-26 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You are aware that your opinions/likes/etc. aren't everyone elses and that just cause you think something is right doesn't make it right?

Go ahead have all the opinions in the world, but if you can judge me I can judge your for being an intolerant, homophobic idiot who thinks the world revolves around him/her.

Also, saying "your ships will influence your real life relationship" sounds to me as if you would also tell a person who likes to read rape fic he/she obviously wants to be raped.

[identity profile] kryss-labryn.livejournal.com 2012-05-27 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Shipping a pairing=/=liking a pairing

Yeah, I only ship characters I can't stand together myself. *eyeroll*
