I also appreciate that the film itself seems to realize what an idiot Loki is about things, which makes it easier for me to...if not root for him, which definitely no, but empathize. Like, they show what an arrogant jag he is and how he's brought down by Hulk in such a simple way, and how Thor is so willing to forgive him but he's just stubborn about it so it doesn't happen. He's so flawed and in a way so vulnerable, and they're willing to show that vulnerability without fear that it won't make him badass enough, and that appeals to me.
I think another aspect of it is that he's the clever one who never fit in in a world of warriors that are all about brute strength, and that's...the sort of thing a certain type of fan really gravitates to.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-31 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)Especially because that scene where the Hulk tosses him around like a rag doll is fucking hilarious.no subject
He had it coming so much and I was still pretty pissed about him killing Coulson that it took actual effort not to cheer that scene. I don't know why I bothered, because both times I've seen it, the theater has freaking exploded with laughter at it.no subject

I'm with you. I like Loki for who he is. He's an interesting villain who has layers, but he's still a villain. I'm just sick of all the "not really evil" or "just one step away from redemption, and he totally wants to be redeemed" comments. He can be redeemed in the same way anyone can be redeemed, but it will take a heck of a lot of work, and he has to want it and admit that he really does have a family (who is his real family because adopted families are real) who love him.

I mean I still think they should be looking at the broader picture (he's done some super bad things, and I really don't buy the "oh but the aliens mind controlled him into it" excuse that I've seen floating around), but eh, I'm really not one to judge.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-01 05:07 am (UTC)(link)Couldn't it be both true that he did feel like he was treated as the outsider, and not quite good enough because of who he was, and still made up a hell of a lot of his slights? I think it's more interesting if he was considered never quite good enough by the court, but still his own neurotic worst enemy?

If you want to write your fics that way, fine, but at least label it AU. Because it isn't canon.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-01 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)We didn't actually see much of Odin's parenting technique, but look at the results. Thor was an arrogant, hot-headed idiot until he got hit with the humility stick, and Loki is a total disaster of a person. I'm sure Loki is totally exagerating or interpreting a lot of stuff in the worst possible light, but "kind of quietly disfunctional" "seems to me like a more plausible starting point for what happened in Thor than "everything was puppies and rainbows until Loki went off the deep end." It's more of a difference of interpretation than willfully ignoring canon. Except for the fic that has everyone wildly out of character, which is, admittedly, a lot of it.

He can be redeemed, most characters can, and I hope he does because that storyline would be intriguing -as long as it's not 'good girl redeems evil man' because while love, either romantic or, say, the brotherly feelings between him and Thor, can help with that... it's not going to stick unless Loki himself decides to be redeemed, for his own sake.
