You know, I absolutely agree with you w/r/t that character assessment, but I'm still fascinated by him. I mean he's totally a little shit, but I guess my appreciation for Tom Hiddleston bleeds through and I'm kind of charmed.

I also appreciate that the film itself seems to realize what an idiot Loki is about things, which makes it easier for me to...if not root for him, which definitely no, but empathize. Like, they show what an arrogant jag he is and how he's brought down by Hulk in such a simple way, and how Thor is so willing to forgive him but he's just stubborn about it so it doesn't happen. He's so flawed and in a way so vulnerable, and they're willing to show that vulnerability without fear that it won't make him badass enough, and that appeals to me.

I think another aspect of it is that he's the clever one who never fit in in a world of warriors that are all about brute strength, and that's...the sort of thing a certain type of fan really gravitates to.

I swear it's probably mostly to do with Tom Hiddleston.

And I say that as someone who likes movie!Loki...well not LIKE as such, but I do find him interesting. But yeah, there's something about that man and his expressive face that almost acts as a brain block to all the moments Loki is a total douche canoe. Even taking into account that there's a strong basis for the slights he's felt (in Thor) from his POV, I'll admit he's off the edge of the map in The Avengers.

I totally don't get the girls who want to be involved with Loki however. That's one relationship where you'd end up just feeling inadequate all the time.

He is the new poster boy for Draco in Leather Pants. As much as I wish he wasn't popping up everywhere fandom needs it's bad boy woobie apparently.

For me Thor and Sif were the best part of the Thor movie but I find that 90% of the fandom doesn't agree with me.

As someone who's only seen Avengers (Thor is on my watch list, I swear! Just like Captain America, Thor, Ironman and Hulk...) and likes Loki:

I was mostly indifferent to Loki until the scene with Thor on Stark Tower, where he seemingly considers Thor's words. I don't know what fandom thinks, but I actually belief that he did want to turn back at that point, to take Thor up on his word, but remembered the bigger bad guys threats from the beginning of the movie and realised that it was too late now. It's that scene coupled with how his head was lowered in shame and defeat at the end of the movie (the infamous muzzle scene) that burnt that idea into my headcanon.

Also, my headcanon is that he has developed massive inferiority and brother issues, but as I haven't seen Thor I can't base that on any canon evidence. (It's actually one of the reasons why I'm reluctant to watch Thor. I have my headcanon all figured out, what if Thor josses that? D:)

I fangirl because I like cunning, manipulative, trickster-like villains. I swoon over him in the comics, too (I have a huge girl!crush on Lady Loki). In all the seriousness, I think he's an interesting, complicated character. That's why I like him. But those are my personal feelings. I can't speak for other Loki fans.

And just out of curiosity, OP, if one your parents (hell, nearly everyone in Loki's case) favored your sibling because you were the "different" one, wouldn't you be a little hurt and bitter over it? Plus, there's the whole "Surprise! You're adopted and a member of our enemy race!" issue.

I think the fact that he was lied to all his life about being adopted and actually a member of a race he and the Asgardians had always considered evil was kind of a big deal -- a lot of fangirls went "oh, well, he's just sooooo confused, dontcha see? He doesn't know who he is and thinks he's wrong and bad, so he's just lost and afraid and lashing out and crying for something to belong to!" Which is a good argument...for a character who's, like, 11 years old. That's why I always considered Loki's rabid fangirls' excuses to be a case of poor application of reasoning rather than completely nonsensical excuses for sympathizing with his sadface.

He's an interesting enough villain, primarily because he was the villain in two movies. It gave him more character development, because he's not particularly complex if you look at either movie alone. Just the combination.

Plus, he has a pretty good woobie face, and you know how fandom is about villains and woobie.

idk about anyone else, but for me the reasons for liking him are:

1. Commanding people to kneel
2. "You were made to be ruled"

While I love Kenneth Brannagh to death, as a theatre kid and a film fan, I don't think he was right to direct Thor. That's not in his style repertoire, and it left me feeling pretty underwhelmed with the whole movie, especially with how Loki was handled. (Loki was never my favorite Marvel character to begin with.)

That said though, I really feel like both Whedon and Hiddleston stepped up to bat with Avengers and created one heck of a villain. Still not my favorite villain ever just by nature of the character, but very snide and conniving and disgusting in a fantastic way and I really liked Hiddles in that role. I've never seen him in anything before, but I'd like to expand my knowledge of his work.

That said, even though I'm not into the people that fandom usually goes big for, I can see why they'd choose Loki. I still feel like he's a relatively weak character, but again to each their own.

The Loki of Norse myth is honestly the most interesting part and one reason I love them. I became interested in Marvel's Loki because of the mythical one and, like the original, he's a very complex villain with many layers. He's even sympathetic, oftentimes. Who doesn't love a good villain? Although, I don't want to marry him, which apparently some people do? I want Thor to marry him, though.

Then again, maybe because I don't hang out on forums or tumblr, I haven't actually seen frothing-at-the-mouth, rabid Loki stanning. Rather, I think I've seen more people complaining about the rabid stanning than it itself. I mean, as I said, I wouldn't want Loki as a lover, but he's legitimately intriguing and who does it hurt to let the fans like who they like? The Avengers has a star-studded cast, so you can find plenty of fans who like what you like, too.

Tl;dr: who cares why people like Loki? Some do because he's an interesting Norse deity re-envisioned (like me); some do because they like leather-bound men with daddy issues (...admittedly also like me); some stand in middle-ground; some don't like him in the slightest, and that's all okay. Fandom is big enough for everyone. ♥
