+1

I tend to leave short reviews because I almost never have much more to say than "good story!" - yeah I get that authors want more but I can't give them more than that. If they're going to get pissed off about the short reviews I'm not going to even bother with it. It's not worth it.

I really wish that fanfic sites had a button similar to the one one dA that says "requests critique", so people know who want detailed, in-depth reviews versus those who are just happy to have any feedback whatsoever, so it doesn't feel like you're shouting into a void.

(Although, I do have to say that if the short comment is a negative "didn't like it", then for the love of FSM if you don't like it tell me why.)

I would really like it if ff.net had a stars rating system like adultff.net. If a fic doesn't have many reviews them people, it seems, generally think it's crap and leave it alone, not being able to see how many people have favourited it or what. I suppose it wouldn't really prevent the bad!fic self-insert where the Suethor brings all her friends along for the ride, and they all give "OMG SO AWSUM!1!" reviews from being given five stars from said inserted friends; but it might help find those actually really decent fics that just haven't gotten many reviews.

Me, I try to leave a decent review if I actually do read it (one for each chapter, ideally), but at the least, I do try and leave a "Very entertaining! Thanks for sharing!" or something, simply because I know how much they mean to me as an author myself.

Yeah, though, I'd agree: if you say you don't like it do say why, even if it's just "Couldn't get into the plot" or whatever. Someting.

Really? You can't think of a single thing besides that when you read fic you like? Not "your characterization is fantastic," "your writing is vivid," "your have the best plot twists," nothin'?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes really. None of those things would occur to me as something to say.

haha, none of those things would ever occur to me to say. And I mean, even if I enjoy the fic there is rarely fantastic characterization or vivid writing or best plot twists. Fic is good, it's rarely fantastic.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't have to be fantastic to come up with a reason to like it, though? IDGI.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
All of your suggested replies were to a fantasitc fic. I suppose if it really was fantastic I would probably be able to think of things. But for a funtime average fic I can't think of much to say.

I don't really get how judgey you're being. Someone says they can't think of something to say, you reply with disbelief and basically calling them a combination of liar and idiot. Pretty rude.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
No they weren't? An okay fic can have good characterization but fail at plot, good plot development but shitty writing/syntax, etc.

I just honestly don't get how someone can have -nothing- to say about a fic they enjoyed. Bad, mediocre fic, yes, but surely if you like something there has to be a reason in there somewhere.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not -nothing- it's a general impression that you enjoyed it. All the examples given were full of extreme words: fantastic, vivid, the best.

Bad and mediocre is not the same thing. A lot of fic out there-- even some that are somewhat enjoyable-- are mediocre.

Holy overreaction , batman. They were doing no such thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Unless one of those elements really stands out, in a one-story-in-a-thousand sort of way, it won't cross my mind. When I read for fun, I read with my crit brain switched firmly off.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
You know many authors seem to think their stuff is unique when really it's not. I'm not going to say "your characterization is fantastic" if it's just on par with everyone else.

I rarely leave reviews and hardly ever is it more than a couple of lines. A fic has to be really well-written to be stand out enough for me to care that much.

Be happy with the 'review alert' that means you're worth my time. Don't complain that I won't gush over you because 99% of the time, you aren't nearly as special as you think you are.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
So... you leave short reviews out of spite, because something isn't zomgamazing? Ok. Way to be encouraging.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
If you think someone leaving a short review is being spiteful, the problem is with you, not your readers.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
If you think apathy and spite are the same things then you really are an idiot and should consult a dictionary posthaste.

I had planned on leaving a longer comment regarding your previous post, but I doubt you would consider that as me being encouraging, and frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. :D

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I just don't see the point of even reading fic if you are that apathetic to it. It seems like a huge waste of time.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Your knowledge of the world around you must be incredibly small. I have read novels and nonfiction works that I have been pretty in-the-middle on. It was interesting and not a waste of my time, but it didn't rock my world or qualify as the best thing ever. I can read a fic that isn't the best thing ever and get through it because it is relatively interesting enough but at the end of the day I could take it or leave it.

I guess you don't experience enough if you expect everything around you to be the best or worst thing you have ever experienced. It must be nice to live in that kind of ignorance.

May I also assume you exit the theater halfway through a movie if it doesn't make your top 10 movies of all time? That being said, how dare you go to a movie and not submit a lengthy review to the production company on your personal experience with each film, even the television you watch as well. How dare you passively consume anything you hypocrite!

[identity profile] mika-kun.livejournal.com 2012-06-03 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
And this is why I don't leave reviews very often.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Be happy with the 'review alert' that means you're worth my time

We should be grateful you deigned to take three seconds out of your day to write a terse and probably sarcastic comment? Being 'worth your time' isn't that important.

.... annnnd this is the kind of reply why people don't leave comments. -_-

If I really like something? Usually what is running through my head is "OMG SQUEE THIS IS SO GOOD EEEEEE LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT." Specifics like characterization, worldbuilding, etc, I generally have to sit and think about to figure out what exactly it is I love about it.
