Not necessarily. Some people use their faves list as a place to store fic they want to read, and some people use it as a recs list, and others use it in different ways.

All it tells me is that people have hit the 'add story to favourites' button. If ff.net showed publicly how many faves a story had just like it shows how many reviews stories have, that would be better. At least then it'd show that a story had received some attention in fandoms where people just don't review.

Do you need praise spoon-fed to you? Can't you just accept that someone clicked on "favorites" because they liked your story? Even if it could be they're making a reading list. Just pretend. Or do people really have to gush over your fic at length before they've properly stroked your ego?

Do you require such validation to function in everyday life too?

If you only write for praise, it's entirely likely that your stuff reflects that.

Funny in the context of all the people saying "I'll go into a spiral of self hate if an author MIGHT not like a one liner". Seems like it's they who have a functioning problem, not an author who might like a comment (note, like, not be in desperate need of, not write only for)

Takes weeks to write a good fic y'know. It's hard work.

Hey, nice exaggeration. A reader shouldn't have to subject themselves to the attack from some author with a chip on their shoulder just because they clicked on a link. Hell, this is why I have bookmark folder of things I am reading rather than saving to favorites or alerting the story. Because of crap like this.

It is unreasonable for the author to expect the reader to spend a comparable amount of time per line on a review as they spend per line on their fic. And while it may take "weeks" to write a well-written fic many authors are unhappy when anything they write does not receive a lengthy review chronicling exactly what were their most memorable moments.

Some people use their faves list as a place to store fic they want to read, and some people use it as a recs list

...but both of those uses would indicate that the user likes, or is at least intrigued, by your fic.

I don't see why people get all upset that they got faved without some generic words of praise accompanying it.
