I really don't understand why people find RPF creepy. Every single person I've ever known has, at one point or another, fantasized about a celebrity, either sexual fantasies or just plain "X and I go out and do amazing things together and become best friends." I have never known a single person who hasn't had some sort of daydream about a celebrity (not saying they don't exist, just that none of them are in my circle of family and friends). The only difference between that and the RPF writers is that the RPF writers write down their daydreams. How does the act of writing these things down suddenly make something that almost everyone does unendingly creepy?

IMO, as a person who gets a little creeped out even by daydreams about shopping with celebs, it is the act of writing them down/sharing them that makes it super creepy! It's also the whole idea of a bunch of people sharing porn about real people (even if it's just about their fake, public personas) and having fanon about little details about celebrities like their favorite foods or hobbies or dick/bust sizes.

(disclaimer: of course I wouldn't tell people they can't do rpf and idrc what they wank to.)

There can be a big gap between fanciful daydreams and writing detail fic about daydreams. The latter has an amount of commitment and thought out in detail that can push it over into creepyville. It's just that much closer to feeling like a stalker.

And then if you add sex and detailed physical descriptions into the mix...yeah. It's weird.

but, as someone who hasn't really done any of this, I still think fiction is a more acceptable venue for pure fantasy. Like, even in pro fic (or biographical movies?) there is the obvious "THIS ISN'T TRUE" disclaimer that everyone is aware of.

It's crossing the line when the fans start acting as if they actually know/have any right to the personal business of the celebrity in question IMO. Saying that you are ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE a person has cheated on their partner based on a few scenes in a tv show? I don't agree with that.

I am so into RPF but sometimes I do find it a little creepy co-opting someone's identity for entertainment. I'm really not sure how I would feel if it were me.

Yeeeeeeeah it depends, for me. On the one hand I have this laissez-faire, "fans gonna fan" attitude towards it, but if it was really degrading/violent/non-consensual (or if there was, say, incest), THEN I'd be creeped out. Of course, I also wouldn't necessarily go looking for it.

I'm not really against RPF, but I'd say that, generally speaking, there's a difference between thinking something on the one hand, and on the other hand writing it down and, more importantly, posting it on a public forum.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Because there's a difference between speculation about 'hey, I think I'd like to be with them' and 'LET ME WRITE DOWN IN GRAPHIC DETAIL A HAVING HOT STEAMY SEX WITH B'?

it's like with fanfic, there's good fanfic then there's creepy fanfic, it's not all one or the other

I feel the same way. I know I'm supposed to be appalled, but, well... I'm nobody really, and yet I'm pretty sure there are people out there who have thought about me having sex or about having sex with me who I would not find appealing. Humans fantasize about other humans, Sometimes pretty randomly.

Now, people I'm not interested in or don't like thinking about me that way is not something I enjoy thinking about, but I can't control other people and if I could, it would be much more fun to make them do crazy shit than to make them not have sexual fantasies about me.

So since I don't really give a fuck about it, I have a hard time figuring out why a celebrity would. The likelihood of people enjoying the thought of you having sex goes up the better known you are. I can't imagine stars haven't figured that one out.

I mean, yes, if someone acted obsessed with me and stalkery it would bother me. But "hey, someone is out there in the world wanking while thinking about you"? No, not really anything I have the brain energy to have an opinion of. And it doesn't really bug me too much if they write it down, either. People write down things they think about.

Now if all they can think about is me, okay, that's kind of weird. But if we're talking about celebs... I don't understand people's obsession with them, but it is fairly common for some people to be really interested in that stuff. I don't think that's inherently creepy. Can it be? Yeah. Is it by default? Not IMO.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I think everyone knows people think about stuff, but 'yeah people are probably thinking about it somewhere' is different from actually SEEING stuff that people write and it being sort of there in text and all

I never have? I sort of pretend that actors don't exist, so that I can enjoy the characters without the secondhand embarrassment of "I'm watching adults play pretend".

But yeah, I think my perspective is weirder than the one you proposed.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-03 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I agree.
