it's me, czeslaw, i just made a new account due to hating my old one's name

The only way you can make comments are if you have disqus set up on your blog, which is a really inefficient commenting system

or you reply to the post if you're following the person

yeah tumblr is not great for keeping track of discussion/etc but i've learned to deal with it because it's really nice for non-fic areas of fandom

Ugh I don't want to make yet another account on another site so I'm posting anon but anyway

Your tumblr friends have to go into their preferences and enable commenting. Then every time they post, they should have a speech bubble icon on their post that allows you to leave a comment without reblogging. The problem is that if you want to carry on a conversation thread, it's practically impossible without reblogging. Then you get those ugly comment trees that are confusing and ugly.

I have a tumblr, but it's mostly for reblogging and posting artwork. Tumblr really sucks for any kind of text-based fandom activity (LIKE FANFICTION)

Yes, this. I was seriously boggling at the sheer number of people who were like "FS should move to Tumblr!!!"

... I have no idea how the hell that would work and still be readable. And Disqus is pretty slow on a couple of my (admittedly older) machines, too.

I'm so relieved I just thought I was a giant idiot.

I just figured out yesterday that ghostery was blocking Disqus. All these pages that I thought just didn't have comments!

Yeah, that's one of the things that has dissuaded me from trying to use tumblr. It isn't so much that ghostery blocks disqus, as it is that disqus has chosen to require browsers to accept its bugs as well as its cookies before it will work. Disqus is blocking disqus, for anybody who isn't down with being tracked.

There must be some upside to sites for using their commenting system, but damned if I can see an upside for users.
