fwiw the reaction from the group of friends I went with was that we generally loved it, but Loki missed way too many tricks. He could have been a lot sharper and lied a few more times, but I guess he had to slip up in order for the Avengers to win. I guess it's a built-in inconsistency when you're dealing with super-smart supervillains.

I think in the context of the movie, Loki was supposed to be pretty broken. His mind's gone, and he's not entirely his own creature. I'd love to see more of Loki as a proper puppet master (I love that, throughout the first, oh, half of Thor, the argument can still be made that Loki isn't actively trying to usurp his brother. He could be, but then again, he might not be. Or both. Excellent trickster moments).

But the built-in inconsistency kind of reminds me of the writers for JL and JLU saying that they had to go easy on Flash-heavy episodes and make sure that his character flaws were well-established, because with a guy who has powers like the Flash, solving any problem is kind of easy.

Likewise, the reason there are so few Riddler-centric episodes of Batman:TAS. It's a fine line to walk, writing a villain who's supposed to be a genius but who is still plausibly defeatable, with riddles that aren't too far over the audience's head, to make sure that Batman looks like he's actually solving a puzzle instead of pulling the solution out of his...er, his utility belt.

The good thing was that the villains were really just there to be villain-ish, and the greater impact of the movie came from gathering up a bunch of dynamic personalities and watching them go.

Yes, that. That was where it shone.
