I'd say don't feel bad about finding a way that works.

Maybe discuss this with your therapist? They might find it interesting to learn about the effects of having some way to control "your" life.

There's really nothing wrong with your method. It sounds like you understand the actual reasons behind why it's helping you, so it's not like it's all out of the blue, or something.

There's been a bit of research on gaming as a therapy for PTSD and mood disorders. Glad it worked for you.

Wow, that's great OP! Anything that helps and doesn't negatively affect other areas of your life is a good thing, imo. Now I wanna try...

This! :-)

You created your own effective therapy, and I congratulate you for it. All the best, OP.

No no no, OP, that's great. I can totally understand why the control would be comforting. Different things work for different people. And I agree with the people who said you can discuss it with your therapist. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

Maybe it's both? I found that Sims 3 encouraged me to clean more often. It's great that you got something positive out of the experience, that's nothing to be ashamed of.

That's awesome that you found something that works! :)

This is awesome!

seriously good on you for coming up with a way like this, anon! and re: therapy, it can help some people, but that's not a sure thing- but I do agree with the other commenters in that you should consider discussing this with your therapist. you've found something that works, and that's good, maybe they could help you come up with ways to make it more effective, now that there's something solid to build on.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-04 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's awesome OP. If it works for you - go for it! Other people's opinions do not matter, it's not them you're helping - it's you.

Sims 3 helped me learn how to mentally 'delete' my bad moodlets. Obviously it doesn't always work, but I'm getting better at not dwelling or telling myself that my bad moodlet will only last for 6 hours and not for ever.

Hey, Harvest Moon is my therapy. It's nice to live a fantasy life for a while, don't you think?

[personal profile] hihartnfics 2012-06-04 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
You're not alone, OP. I play both Sims 2 and 3 (and have for a long time), but it was only after I made a simself and actually replicated my life with her (rather than just using her as a random playable or character in simstories) that I discovered I was able to make better connections between what was going on in my head and what was going on around me. Now when I'm freaking out (I suffer from anxiety and infrequent panic attacks) or when I am ambiguously stressed, I stop and consider what the moodlets would look like, where my "mood bars" are at, and what would need to be done to make the moodlets positive and/or put me in green or plat again. It definitely helps, way more than the various techniques and "tricks" my counselor gave me.
