So where does that leave Sokka and Yue? The two of them sure as hell wanted to be together and yet they definitely weren't going to be. Sorry, but the logic of "Toph couldn't have had any canon love interest because all canon ATLA loves get requited" would be pretty feeble even if we didn't have direct counter-evidence.

That wasn't what I said. I said the crush wasn't as obvious so that people could miss it and not get surprise!unrequited! mixed in with the happy epilogue ending.

Sokka and Yue had the "didn't happen in the end" aspect to it to add to the tragic of Yue's storyline. The attraction was mutual and personally welcomed, if complicated by outside factors such as Yue's engagement and outside obligations. The fact that they didn't get to be married in the end was just another drop in the "oh no she died but she was so young and had to much potential and her life was so sad" bucket. That's completely different from Sokka not even noticing that Toph, a younger girl, has a goofy kid-crush on him, as he is already in mutual flirtingz with someone else his own age who he saw as attractive from pretty much the moment they met at this point.

Long story short making people sad re: Yue was the POINT of Yue. Toph isn't a tragic character and the ending should still be happy so her crush shouldn't become huge and foreshadowed all over the place but stay cute and easily ignored.
