Het is rare in SPN because the show is male-led, and the primary relationships are between men. Same for Sherlock and Merlin S1(which I noticed you mentioned in the secret below).

In my experience, nearly always, shows that focus on the male leads and the relationship between them will be predominantly slash. Shows with male and female leads, or female-led shows (such as Buffy) will be predominately het. Shows with two female leads or that have a strong focus on a relationship between two main female characters will be more femmeslash (unfortunately there just isn't that many of those types of shows).

I'm sure someone can quote me exceptions, but I've generally found this to be the case. It's not that het doesn't exist - it's just that you're not going to find much of it in fandoms for shows that revolve around the male characters.

I agree, actually. You can break it down even further by saying the two most popular characters, male or female, will usually be the most popular pairing in a fandom, and in a good portion of shows, the most popular characters are guys. I just think that most of the currently/recently popular shows are male-lead driven, and therefore also predominantly slash. Those fandoms are typically the most popular, too, so they tend to dominate the field and make it harder to find the smaller fandoms that do have het. Which is why I say that in my experience, in general, it's been harder to find het stuff, even in fandoms with female leads, because the slash of the large fandoms dominates those fandoms and leads other slash stuff to dominate their fandoms.
(that came out a lot...meaner? than I intended. It's just the nature of fandom; the large groups that dominate large fandoms also tend to dominate smaller fandoms for similar reasons)

Basically, I agree. And I have no problem with slash; anyone who knows me I love me some SPN slash. But I'm a hetter at heart, and it's consistently disappointing to go into a new fandom and find at least 90% of the fandom is slash-oriented and doesn't give a flying fuck about het.
