Oh, man, where to start?

1. The Elves at Helm's Deep was all Peter Jackson. In the books, Legolas was the only Elf.

2. They were absent from the Battles that Tolkien described in detail (in Gondor and Rohan), but there were pitched battles in Mirkwood and Lothlorien, which ended with Dol Guldur being brought to the ground. Everyone goes "Oh, the Elves had all left" - they hadn't, but they were fighting their own very real battles in the north. Tolkien didn't focus on them because he thought the focus of LotR had to be on mortality, and thus mortals.
