What gives is that the elves were added to the Battle of Helm's Deep for the movie for added effect. In the books, they're present for neither battle.

Gracias. I keep forgetting what they left out, especially since I recently took a Tolkien seminar :p

Hadn't pretty much all the elves left for the Grey Havens at that point? Or am I crazy? I haven't read the books/watched the movies in a while.

Yes. The movies kind of screw it up by adding them to the Helm's Deep battle and then ignoring them from then on, when OP is sort of following a logical train of thought where if they cared enough to help with one fight, why not stick around for the whole war?

Lots had, but there were still significant kingdoms in Mirkwood, Lothlorien, the Grey Havens, etc.

I think a lot of those left in their lands were too busy defending their realms. They were under attack from Sauron's forces as well - Lothlorien was on fire, if I recall correctly.

They were too busy moving to their new home to fight. Sofas aren't going to pack themselves, you know.

Oh, man, where to start?

1. The Elves at Helm's Deep was all Peter Jackson. In the books, Legolas was the only Elf.

2. They were absent from the Battles that Tolkien described in detail (in Gondor and Rohan), but there were pitched battles in Mirkwood and Lothlorien, which ended with Dol Guldur being brought to the ground. Everyone goes "Oh, the Elves had all left" - they hadn't, but they were fighting their own very real battles in the north. Tolkien didn't focus on them because he thought the focus of LotR had to be on mortality, and thus mortals.

It's Helm's Deep
And Tolkein elves are assholes, I never liked them.

That was one of the points Tolkien was trying to make in the books: the time of the Elves was coming to an end and the age of Men was beginning, which is why Men made up the bulk of the forces of good during the War of the Ring. The Elves had already gotten their fair share of fighting during the First Age and in the Second Age under Gil-galad when the One Ring was originally taken from Sauron. By the end of the Third Age there weren't enough Elves left in Middle Earth to make a big dent in Sauron's forces in the East (they had their own smaller battles in Mirkwood and Lorien) and all the famous Elven warriors of the previous Ages had already left or gotten themselves killed by that point.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-05 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
They had their own battles to fight, I suppose.

Ditto on what everyone's said so far.

In an interesting bit of trivia, though, the movies did leave out Elrond's twin sons (Arwen's older brothers), Elladan and Elrohir. They weren't present at the battle of Helm's Deep, but did participate in the the battle of Pelennor Fields in Gondor (and accompanied Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn and co. during the Path of the Dead bits, if I remember correctly). So, technically, Legolas wasn't the only elf that fought in some of the later main battles.

lol, the battle at HELM'S Deep only had the elves in it (besides Legolas) in the movie. Haldir wasn't even suppose to die. All Peter Jackson's doing. The Battle for Helm's Deep was suppose to be an homage to the 300 Spartans in the books.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Legolas actually makes a comment in the ROTK film about how both Elves and Dwarves are facing war in their own homeland. Which was true - the Elves of Lothlorien and Mirkwood had to deal with Dol Guldur, the old fortress of Sauron, and there's a theory (book-version) that it was being commanded by one of the Ringwraiths.

And the Ringwraiths, I should mention, were a hundred times more badass and difficult to deal with (oh, a fire! runaway!) than in the movies.

My problem with the Elves at Helm's Deep is how those Elves with their fancy armour are all slaughtered while Legolas, with his leather shoulder pads, isn't even scratched.

Cool story bro, but I just can't watch the screen when all the elves die. Even setting aside that they're extremely pretty, it was just so brave of them to come to aid their allies in an utterly hopeless battle. Idk, it's kind of extra-courageous to be willing to die for an ancient alliance when otherwise you could be pretty much immortal.

Forget the elves

(Anonymous) 2012-06-06 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Where were the dwarves? And the others wizards? I know there are more of them than Gandalf, Saruman, and Radagast.

Were they hiding? Busy fighting elsewhere? Playing a really intense game of Monopoly?

i mean the elves were off fighting battles elsewhere, right? let's go w/ that to explain why they weren't at the pelennor and/or the morannon in movie verse
